Sports Pee Wee Eagles lef win slip in final minutes © The Peninsula Philbrooks Boat- yard Pee Wee AA Rep: Eagles hockey team couldn’t hold on to a 3-0 lead in Nanaimo Sunday. The hometown Nanaimo team stormed back to earn a 4-4 tie in the game. Peninsula jumped out to a 3-0 lead by the end of the first period on goals by Jason Mohr, Jonathan Zielinski and Teddy Broadley. Nanaimo countered with three markers to tie the score midway through the third period, before Mohr got his second goal of the game. The lead was short-lived, how- ever, with Nanaimo tying the score less than two minutes later. Peninsula goalie Trevor Eeg played a stellar game, making 37 Saves, said team spokesman Ray Johnson. In a previous game on Dec. 3, Runners from Royal Oak domi- nated the Grade 7 and 8 events at the third Saanich School District cross country race Wednesday. The race was hosted by North Saanich middle school. Royal Oak boys and girls swept the top three places in the Grade 8 competitions. For the boys, Cailen MacPher- son, Jeff Barber and Mike Bowles were one-two-three, while Christa the Eagles easily dominated the Victoria Minor AAA Warriors Rep team in a 15-8 league victory. The big guns for Peninsula were Cam Williams with four goals and James Isaac and David Warren with two each. Singles were scored by Zielins- ki, Mohr, Broadley, Curtis Green, Cory Robinson, Jamie Pollock and Sean Owens. Goalie Matthew Johnson was strong in net, kicking out 25 shots. The record on the season stands at 10 wins, six losses and two ties. ATOMS. RECORD EVEN The Peninsula Pay Less Atom Rep Eagles came away from two weekend games with a tie and a loss. Friday night, the Eagles couldn’t hold off a late surge by Juan de Fuca, allowing their opponents to score with two seconds left to salvage a 5-5 tie, said team spokes- man Glen Campbell. Heard, Jenny Heard and Larissa Shumuk were the top three girls. Each team compiled six points for the team win. The Royal Oak Grade 7 boys continued the sweep. Kiley Lalonde, Sean Juteau and Mike Hicks were the leaders. However, the Mount Newton Grade 7 girls took first in the team title with 14 points. They were led by Carla Willock, who was first. goal scorers. The. line of Dagan and Tyson Vancadsand and Reid Wilson did an excellent job forechecking, while Colin Tulloch and Aaron Wing played well defensively. Scoring for Peninsula were Mark Campbell with two, and Blake Munro, Jeff Kotyk and Sean Wilson with singles. Saturday against Cowichan Val- ley, the Eagles were downed 7-2, moving their league record to .500. Despite the score, Bryce McFad- den had an outstanding game in goal, tuming aside 51 shots. Matt Baker, Brendan Fletcher and Ryan Kennett did an admira- ble job on defence against the Cowichan onslaught. North Saanich hosts cross country Becky Herbert and Samantha Milne of North Saanich placed second and third respectively. The Royal Oak Grade 6 girls emerged in front with eight points. They were led by Kim Harper and Elida Nimani.
