Anti-freeze hazardous to pets Chemical products intended to beat the cold can make winter hazardous for pets, warns SPCA officer manager Sylvia Holinaty. Many animals are attracted ‘to the sweet scent and taste of anti- freeze and will lap up the chemi- cal, which is a deadly poison. “Animals like chocolate, they have a sweet tooth at times,” Holinaty said. However the outcome of a binge on anti-freeze can be deadly. The poison can cause convulsions and - kill the animal if treatment is not received in time. Holinaty said the SPCA often receives reports of poisoned ani- mals around this time of year. “It’s a horrible, horrible death for the animal.” Some companies are now pro- ducing anti-freeze with an additive which imparts a bitter odor and taste, so animals are not attracted to the chemical, Holinaty added. Another danger for animals is rock salt as some of the chemicals in the salt are poisonous. Animals can pick up the salt on their paws when walking in snow or slush and then ingest the chemi- cals when they lick their paws clean. Holinaty advises pet owners to clean and dry their pet’s feet when bringing the animal inside after a walk though the snow, especially if the area has been salted. LIGHT GP THEIR CHRISTMAS!
