Tocks in my head,” Community Pearl has rocks | in head, jewels in hand by Valorie Lennox The Review Pearl is rock-struck. “My husband told me I have says the Saani- chton woman, whose home is scattered with pieces of rhodonite, onyx, jasper, agate and jade. Starting with chunks of shape- less rock, Pearl Willis cuts, carves, grinds and polishes to produce gleaming stone-set jewelry. “T’ve always been crazy about rocks — the marvel of nature that they can be so beautiful.” But bringing out that beauty is a long process. A piece of rough thedonite, for example, looks like a lump of coal when Pearl first brings it home. Only by piercing the outer layer of rock is the delicate pink and black-veined stone revealed. “From the outside, unless there’s a chip, you can’t even see the color,” Pearl explains. With rhodonite, often heavier stones are better quality. Stull, choosing which chunk of rock to buy is a guessing game. “You can’t always tell by the outside of the stone.” Fractures running through the rock can also make an otherwise beautiful piece of rock unusable. But the fractures cannot even be seen until the stone is sliced open, an operation which requires a large saw with a diamond grit blade. Pearl uses a 14-inch diameter DIAMOND-GRIT GRIN- DING wheels shape a piece of rhodonite under Pearl's skilled hands. saw to cut rough rock into uniform slices of stone. “Tt isn’t like cutting wood. she Wood cuts much faster,” remarked. The saw blade drops into the rock and grinds through. Willis is among the 100 crafts people participating in the annual fair, held in Sanscha Hall at the comer of Beacon Avenue and the Pat Bay Highway. The fair is open from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Admission is $1 for adults and includes a chance at over 70 door prizes to be awarded during the weekend. The Peninsula Community Association will also operate a concession with all proceeds going to community service pro- jects. Several other organizations will have tables at the fair, including the Monday Bees and the Save the Children Fund. Money raised by the Monday Bees crafts will support the Mt. Newton Centre. Canny candy lovers at the fair might want to test their skills at the Save the Children Fund’s jelly. bean game. For $1, participants will be given a chance to guess the number of jelly beans in a four litre jar. A draw will be made Sunday and each of three winners will receive $25, vouchers from Thnifty Foods and bags of jelly beans. The organization will also have cards, homemade jams and inter- national crafts available with pro- ceeds going to Save the Children Fund. : : miallony s « House Dressing | Mallory Wilkins: idc/asid/lsia New home consultation service for decorating, reno- vating & updating ideas: 15 years experience in interior design to save you $ $ on costly mistakes Home Consultation: 598-4745 DECEMBER 2nd 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. THE TOWN OF SIDNEY WILL BE HOLDING A “TOWN MEETING” Monday, December 2nd, 1991 7:30 p.m. at Sanscha Hall to allow members of the community to be aware of current municipal affairs MAYOR MARIE ROSKO HAS CO-ORDINATED THE “BRAVO CANADA” Mobile Exhibit Exposition to be available and open to the public: AT SANSCHA HALL: DECEMBER 3rd & 4th 9 a.m. to 12 noon 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. FRIENDSHIP BAPTIST CHURCH 7820 Central Saanich Rd. 9:45 a.m.........
