The final step, polishing, is done on a leather pad embedded with diamond dust. “The molecular structure of the stone really changes by the time you get the finishing shine on if.” Unlike the water-washed stones on a beach, which only shine when wet, Pearl’s stones will gleam forever. But Pearl notes the water- washed stones are many people’s introduction to the craft. “A lot of people tell me that they pick up rocks anywhere they go. I know. where theyre headed.” The first step for such future ‘tockhounds’— as hobbyists like Pearl are described — is to buy a tumbler. The tumbler will permanently reproduce the beauty of water- washed stones. ““That’s the begin- ning of lapidary work, the polished pebble.” Then, like Pearl, the rock-lover will discover the challenge of “If you want to keep up your hobby, you have to go to craft fairs. You supply all your relatives and friends — you can only give away, so much. “What else are you going to do?” Pearl admits the time required to produce the cabochon stones ensures her hobby will never become a profitable venture. But the proceeds allow her to maintain her equipment and buy more stones. “It’s a hobby. Some people go to alcohol but I’d rather put money in stone,” she says. “I’ve tried many other hobbies but I won’t change.
