Sports Olson second in Winter Tour Local golfer Rob Olson was a bogey away from a share of first place in the first event on the Canadian PGA Winter Tour last week. Olson, 20, who earned his summer Tour card this year, had a 36-hole score of 141 in the event, which was held in Titus- ville, Florida, near Orlando. He opened with a 71, which included a double bogey on the 18th hole, and shot a 70 on the second day. He got in trouble on the 18th again, scoring a bogey. That one stroke put him behind the leader, who carded a 140 score. Olson, a Glen Meadows pro, finished in a tie for second, earning $1,050. The Winter Tour continues until the middle of December. Runners close to leaders Peninsula Track Club ath- letes Sarah Thomber and Chad DePol were among the leaders Saturday in the junior races at the Canadian Cross Country Championships in Halifax. DePol was third in the eight- kilometre men’s race. His time was 27 minutes, 12 seconds, less than a minute behind the leader, who crossed the line in 26:34. Thomber, 16, who won the provincial high school champi- onship earlier this month, was seventh in the 4K women’s race. She had a time of 15:45, compared to the winning time of 14:54. Although technically a juvenile runner (17 and under), she qualified as a junior (18-19) after winning the women’s juvenile race at the provincial championships this month. She has been picked to be on the six-person Canadian junior team which will take part in the Ikdon Relay Dec. 30 in Hawaii. Each competitor will run about seven kilometres in the relay. DePol narrowly missed a spot on the team travelling to the world championships. The top two in each category quali- fied. He will get another chance at a cross country meet this spring in Victoria to gain a berth on the team. Meanwhile, Peninsula coach Mike Creery was fifth in the men’s masters 8K race at the Canadian championships. He had a time of 29:34 and finished over two minutes behind the leader.
