PAE eg PALI SC Yo Oy ~ News Chamber committees part of higher profile by. Girard Hengen The Review The Saanich Peninsula Chamber of Commerce will focus on its “natural role’ as the business voice in the community this year, says incoming president Paul Dee- fon. This means staking out posi- tions and speaking out on issues that concem business people, plus making presentations to all levels of government to ensure the-cham- ber’s positions are heard. “Our image has to go up in the community,’ Deeton told chamber members gathered Thursday night for their annual general meeting. “We need a higher profile. We need to have more credibility,” he said in his first address as the new president. “We have a natural role as the business voice in our community representing the business com- munity,” he said. A goal of the chamber is to_sign up 1,000 members, which Deeton says will give the organization more clout. He said the chamber should express the opinion of the mem- bership when dealing with govern- ments on specific issues. To that end, Deeton announced the formation of four committees charged with various chamber functions. One, the municipal liaison and political action committee, vows to be an “issues-oriented” group. Among its tasks will be trying to persuade all three Peninsula municipalities to work with the Commonwealth Games organiza- tion in attracting events to the Peninsula. The athletic venues are set, but Games organizers are still plan- ning cultural and other Games- related events. Outgoing president Rick Roberts said chamber members were “ concerned the three munici- palities will be standing on the sidelines looking in” because councils don’t want to get involved. The committee will also exam- ine whether to stop the chamber’s ‘tourism promotion activities in the absence of funding from the municipalities.
