Both belong ue) the South Malahat 4-H City kids hop to 4-H projects Forget the farm, the cows and the lambs: Even city youngsters can benefit from the 4-H program, learning animal husbandry, showmanship and service. All they need is enough space in the backyard for a hutch and they can hop in with rabbits. Two of the enthusiastic mem- bers of the South Malahat 4-H Club are 14-year-olds Shannon Shade of Sidney and Keri Ward of North Saanich. All but one of the club’s 10 members live on the Peninsula and many live in urban neighborhoods. “The rabbit club is more for city people,” explains Shannon, who easily finds room for her two mini-lop rabbits and one Holland lop rabbit in a corner of the backyard. “It’s for young people who want to get involved in 4-H programs but don*t have acreage.” Keri owns one mixed-color Hol- land lop rabbit. During the summer, both girls spent time grooming their rabbits and getting ready for the shows held in August and September.. Different competitions judge both the rabbit and the owner’s showmanship. One of Shannon’s rabbits, Bridget, was named grand champion at the Cobble Hill Fair and a first and third at the Luxton Fair. Another rabbit picked up a second at the Cobble Hill Fair and a second at the Luxton Fair. Keri also collected ribbons, a first and second at Cobble Hill and a first and second at Luxton. Shannon also picked up a reserve grand championship for showmanship. Learning how to care for the rabbits and show them is only part of the 4-H program. Both Shannon and Keri hold executive positions in the club and help run the monthly meetings. Both were also chosen to attend the Foundation One camp in July, a 4-H Leadership Training camp limited to 75 4-H members from throughout B.C. The club is open to young people aged 10 to 19. Anyone interested is invited to call Kate Cowood at 380-1939. All they need is enough room for a hutch. i =e ee ay The Family of Sean Caldwell would like to express their sincere appreciation to The Sidney Shriners jor their caring Support and en- couragement.
