es Community CHURCH Continued from Page A12 turned his energy to establishing a Baptist Church in Central Saanich. By 1891 the community was large enough to support the church and the first meetings were held in the school house on East Saanich Road. _ The church then moved to the newly opened Temperance Hall, now the Lions Club, on Central Saanich Road in 1896. Included in John Sluggett’s fare- well message to his family in 1909 was an appeal to build a church building for the congregation. John Sluggett left a substantial legacy to help build the church, to which the family added more funds and a donation of property on West Saanich Road at Marchant Drive. By then the Sluggett property included almost 1,100 acres and Stretched from the Saanich inlet on the west to one farm short of the ocean on the east. The family owned two-thirds of what is now the community of Brentwood Bay. The church, erected with volun- teer labor, was dedicated in December 1911 as a memorial to John and Fanny Sluggett. Rev. Fred Tapscott, who served for 20 years, was the first of a long line of pastors who have main- tained a continuous ministry in the church over the past 80 years. A strong youth ministry has been part of the church’s ministry throughout the century, present pastor Don Reed noted. “Even in the low periods of the church’s history, a vital youth ministry was sustained. “Through the years, several youth have gone from the church info Overseas Mission service.” Pastor of the church since 1989, Rev. Reed has encouraged building a new facility. The congregation now hopes construction on a new ~- church will start in 1994. A homecoming, a stewardship banquet and two special services were held last weekend to mark the church’s centennial. Sa ee PAY NO TAXES! ONE DAY ONLY!!
