BRENTWOOD BAY A PIONEER CHURCH, Sluggett Memorial Baptist, first met in the local school and then in the Temperance Hall. The church celebrated its centennial last weekend. A church which started in a classroom 100 years ago cele- brated its anniversary last week- end. Named after the Sluggett pio- neer family, the church was founded through the efforts of Brentwood pioneer John Sluggett, who came to the area with his wife Fanny and seven children in 1876. Married in North Devon in 1854, the couple had left for Canada three weeks later. For the next 20 years they lived in village after village, while John worked as a carpenter, farmer and store- keeper. In 1875, John Sluggett first came to Vancouver Island and bought a 700-acre block of land in- Central Saanich, paying $7.50. per acre. Within a year, his family had moved to the area. At first they lived in a small frame building near the present Maples Gallery and then moved into an abandoned log cabin on what is now Benvenuto Avenue. The following summer, 1877, they built their homestead on West Saanich Road, which stood until the late 1940s. John Sluggett soon became a community leader, holding several offices and helping found the West Saanich School and three post offices in Central Saanich. The Sluggett Post Office, serv- ing the Sluggett Valley, later became the Brentwood Bay Post Office. Sluggett was also a strong sup- porter and a charter member when ~ the First Baptist Church was founded in Victoria in 1876. After helping a group of Methodists establish a Sunday School, which in time became Shady Creek Church, Sluggett Continued on Page A13 CHILDREN'S HALLOWE'EN COSTUME PARTY For kids of all ages! Thurs.
