iy x News No grants for charity house All applicable municipal fees will be paid for construction of a house in Dean Park estates, even though the project is a fundraiser for the David Foster Foundation Society. North Saanich council decided Oct. 21 to follow the no grants policy after receiving a request from the society to waive munici- pal fees for the project. Mayor Maurice Chazottes esti- mates the fees would total about $2,000 and suggested waiving the fees would be equal to giving a grant. Ald. Bill Turner and Ald. Bill Gordon both expressed support for the Foundation but agreed council could not waive the no grants policy. Tumer noted the municipality charges building fees for churches. Proceeds from selling the house will go to the Foundation, which helps children who require major organ transplants. But the cat’s owner, Tina Fidler, doubts cat Kreemo Joe was enact- ing the role of a Good Samaritan when he scooted into the house Oct. 8 with Ben in his jaws. “The bird was just screaming as the cat came in the house,” Fidler — said. “IT ran up to the bedroom and I got him cornered.” Fidler pried open Kreemo Joe’s mouth to retrieve Ben. After checking the budgie and finding no sign of injury, Fidler put the little green and yellow bird in the lower half of the cage used by the Fidler*s pet cockatiel. Colombian Garcia Marquez’s universally beloved novel One Hundred | Years of Solitude has become a monolith, casting its shadow over all of Latin American fiction. One wonders if Marquez himself might be intimidated : by his adoring public's expectation that he meet the standard he set for ‘| himself? In his fictional portrait of Simon Bolivar, The General in His Labyrinth, Marquez adheres closer to historical fact than ever before. The Bolivar that emerges is a man old before his time, angry that his work — the liberation of most of a continent and its unification into one strong state — was falling into ruin, his dreams destroyed by others less able than he. As good as Solitude?
