carry on,” TheReview Wednesday, October 23, 1991 — AI6 Good campaign despite loss It was a disappointing result for Social Credit candidate Richard Holmes, but “we had a terrific campaign,” campaign manager Penny Boone said. “Richard grew phenomenally. He really did a superlative job,” she said. “I hope he hangs in there and runs (for another elected position) because he’s great. He’s a real credit to the community,” she said. B.C. Reform challenged The challenge for the Reform Party of B.C. in the aftermath of last week’s election is to show voters it is a party on the rise, says local candidate Don Hutchings. Hutchings received 518 out of 26,957 votes cast in the Saanich North and The Islands riding, finishing in fourth place. “TI guess people weren’t ready for us,” he said. “The Liberal surge did us in and Clive Tanner is pretty well known on the Penin- sula. “We went there with the idea we would give it a shot. We can’t be accused of splitting the vote like everyone said we would.” Until the next election, the RPBC may well target those who are still searching for an alterna- tive, he said. “Those unhappy Socreds need a place to go,” he said, adding he doesn’t believe many voters were “totally satisfied with voting NDP or Liberal.” Reformers met in Sidney on Saturday to discuss “the pluses and minuses of what we did,” said Hutchings. He said the party will be back, and lessons were learned in run- ning a campaign. “We didn’t have all the funds the other parties had, but we made our beginning and we're going to he said. Holmes spent part of the elec- tion campaign distancing himself from the provincial campaign Strategy, including a condemnation of Rita Johnston’s campaign man- ager for circulation of a “phoney assessment notice.” He also called for free votes in the Legislature and promised to represent Saanich North and The Islands constituents if elected. However, the results tell the story as Holmes received only 2,760 votes, compared to 13,263 for winning Liberal Clive Tanner and 8,426 for second-place fin- isher and New Democrat Elsie MceMurphy. “He was a little taken aback at the degree Mr. Tanner won,” Boone said. Holmes visited Tanner’s cam- paign office Thursday night about 9:25 p.m. to concede the victory and congratulate his rival. “People really liked Richard. Unfortunately he was waving a Socred banner,” Boone said. “I don’t think it was Richard, I think it was the party. “T know people were impressed with him. He’s a very fine gentle- 2 man. DR.
