Outdoors TheReview Wednesday, October 23, 1991 — ‘Alot Autumn is upon us. The season of mists and mellow fruitfulness, migrating birds, spawning salmon, the incredible be-jewelled webs of orb-weaving spiders, plump fat- laden bears and handsome garter snakes seeking out winter quarters, the World Series. And mushrooms. Our photo today features one of the “destroying angels,” Amanita muscaria, undoubtedly the most colorful member of the group. Though defintely poisonous and ever to be banned as an acceptable subject for gustatory experiment, fortunately, like the conspicuously striped skunk, this mushroom car- les warning signals. - The cap is characteristically bright red or orange which usually shades into yellowish at the mar- gins and bears series of conspicu- ous white wart-like particles on its otherwise smooth, polished sur- face. It varies in size from three to a dozen inches across and sports alabaster-white gills and stem. Dangerous and delicious mushrooms The stem is swollen at the base and bears a readily recognized white fluffy ring. The subject of our photo was found in the shade under conifers, probably its most preferred habitat in our region. Amanita muscaria, like other members of the group, is envel- oped at the early stage in a wrap- per-like envelope called the uni- versal veil. As these buttons force their way up from the soil and into the air, the veil breaks leaving half in the earth as a sort of cup, or volva. The other half forms a ring around the stem as well as the warts on the surface of the cap. Why “destroying angels?” I suspect that we are all aware of the fact that in the world of people, exceptionally attractive and beau- tiful babes with angelic figures have been known on occasion to figure in the destruction of the careers of kings, princes and even aspiring politicians. - Remember Cleopatra and Helen The perfect place for ak Destro of Troy? Extremely pulchritudinous members of the Amanita group have in numerous instances dest- royed unwary individuals who chanced to include these mushrooms in their diet. Several Amanita species are very poisonous, some more viru- lent than others. The type in our photo has long been known as the “fly agaric’’ since it has been thought that concoctions prepared from its tissues may be used as a potent killer of pesky flies. It was originally thought that the muscarine found in several species of Amanita was the main toxic agent affecting consumers of these fungi. However, it has been discovered by very careful researchers that the symptoms resulting from eating these mushrooms are due to ibote- nic acid and muscimol, two closely related compounds (McKenny, Stuntz and Ammirati, 1987.) Nevertheless, continue to enjoy those many harmless and delicious species which you can positively identify. PS.
