John Richard Smith, 27, pleaded guilty to both charges. Crown counsel Stephen Fudge said the gas theft occurred about 12:45 a.m. Nov. 29, when a witness saw three people siphoning gas from a car parked in the lot of Lochside Drive apartments. Police located the suspect vehicle, which had driven off the road into a ditch. A gas can and siphon hose were found in the car. On March 29, Central Saanich police were operating radar when they were advised by two motorists that the driver of another vehicle was probably impaired, Fudge said. Police located the suspect car, noted the vehicle weaving in the lane and stopped the car at the comer of Keating Crossroad and West Saanich Road. The driver, Smith, had breathalyzer readings of .15 and .14 per cent. Judge Alan Filmer fined Smith $300 for impaired driving and $100 for the gasoline theft. Island man had high readings A Pender Island man had three breathalyzer readings of .20, .23 and .23 per cent after being stopped by police at 8:10 p.m. April 26 on Pender Island, Crown counsel Stephen Fudge said in Sidney - provincial court Sept. 26. Fudge said 41-year-old Brian Hanson crossed the centre line while rounding a curve on Canal Road. Hanson pleaded guilty to driving with a blood-alcohol reading over .08 per cent. Judge Wayne Smith fined Hanson $400 and suspended his licence for a year. Woman stopped driving too late Realizing she was impaired, a 29-year-old Saanichton woman pulled off East Saanich Road near Forest Park Drive and tried to sober up, defence lawyer Mayland McKimm explained in Sidney provincial court Sept. 26. At 11:50 p.m. May 4, police found Shari Lynn Pollock asleep behind the wheel of her car, with her keys in the ignition. She had breathalyzer readings of .20 and .19 per cent, Crown counsel Stephen Fudge said. Judge Wayne Smith fined Pollock $350 and prohibited her from driving for a year Prankster lifted broken street sign A fallen sign was too much temptation for 22-year-old Timothy Coles Webb of Sidney, who was found by police carrying the sign shortly after 2 a.m. July 12. An area resident reported the possible theft of a checkerboard street sign to police, who found Webb walking along the street with the sign. Defence lawyer Mayland McKimm said Webb had been drinking and took the sign as a prank. The sign had fallen off the post but was not damaged by Webb, McKimm said.
