SCRIBES Continued from Page A9 13, and daughter Anna, 10 — as Farrant gave up her job to write full-ume. “It’s not a dual-income family,” she notes. One sacrifice, keeping only one car on the road, tumed out to be blessing for Farrant, who finds the lack of transportation keeps her home and writing. She hopes the sacrifices now will lead to increasing recognition of her work. “Writing was always my desire and my goal.” BOND PRESERVES PAST Another first-time author, Bea Bond, preserves her own past and the past of the island community she loved in Looking Back on James Island, a history of the Canadian Explosives plant and company town on the island off the Saanich peninsula. Bond lived on the island from 1950 to 1962, handling secretarial and public information chores in the company office. It was then she first began gathering information about the island’s history. Her husband, James W. Bond, was the first child on the island and the couple were the last to move away when the company town was closed. She first wrote a history of the company and town in 1963 when aot Explosives Ltd. celebrated ~ its 50th anniversary on James Island. Those notes plus research col- lected from a 1970 reunion of the Hugh and Christina Munro family formed the basis of her book. She worked hard to: finish the book so it could be published during Sidney’s Centennial year. “I feel it was a tribute to the community,” she said. “Tt was like a Shangra-la over ~ there. We were all neighbors, no doors locked and no fences between the properties.” fair and special events, including a 1957 fashion show of then-trendy sack’ dresses made from real burlap and flour sacks. Another highlight was a fashion Diamonds can be a man’s best friend, too, when it adds that final touch of elegance and sophistication to his ap- pearance. Twelve fiery diamonds combined with lustrous gold in a strong masculine design. Such a powerful statement at such a modest price! The community held its own fall — 9403 Beacon Avenue Sidney, B.C. 655-1515 y # “Fracels._ jewelers) show of a new wash-and-wear fabric developed by C-I-L, which included the models taking off the clothes, tossing them into an on- Stage washing machine and dryer and then putting the clothes back on. The book is selling well at local outlets, Bond reports. She will be going to Nanaimo for an autograph party in the next few weeks. She notes the new owners of the island, Pacific Parkland Properties, also ordered several copies of the book. For Bond, the greatest reward was preserving the story. “I was mainly anxious to get down all the details because I’m the only one who has all the particulars on hand. “It’s the end of an era. The company was there for 70 years and they should be remembered.” 5:00 - 6:30 p.
