The Review - Wednesday, October 23,1991 — A27 656-1151 Block Parents needed by Cst. Jim Woolford Central Saanich police Oct. 21-27 is Block Parent Week on the Saanich Peninsula and more Block Parents are needed to increase the safety of children in neighborhoods. Central Saanich police say that abductions and other crimes involving children would less likely to occur in neighborhoods if there were more people registered as Block Parents. Even if you’re a Block Parent for five minutes a week, that five minutes could mean a lot-to a child in danger. The program is designed to assist children if they are bothered by strangers, if they are sick, injured, being bullied or are bitten or frightened by a dog. You don’t have to have children to be a Block Parent. Anyone over the age of 19 can apply, as long as he/she successfully passes a security screen. Once accepted by police, you will be issued a sign to put in your window. This lets children know your house is a safe place to run if they need help. The sign also lets strangers who come into your neighborhood know that residents are protecting the children. Block Parent applicants can be refused either because their lifestyles would not be considered a safe haven for children or they have a criminal record related to drugs, violence, child abuse or sexual abuse of any kind. To have every child know about the program and where they can go for help is one of our department’s goal. Our goal is to have two Block Parents per block just in case one registered member is not home to help a child who is lost or in danger. : Currently, Saanichton has less than 40 Block Parents which is dangerously low. Brentwood Bay and Keating have less than 60 Block Parents. It is hoped that the citizens of Central Saanich will see that this is an important program and pick-up an application. Applications can be obtained at the police station, schools and recently Central Saanich has placed them in McDonald’s and the Peninsula Co-op Store on Keating Crossroad. The Block Parent program is not just for children, it’s for anyone, including seniors, who need help. More members. are needed because today’s society is so mobile. Children often do not know families that live only a few houses away. In many households, both parents are working, and without Block Parent homes, a frightened child could possibly go to several houses before finding someone to help. This delay could result in tragedy. FINGERPRINT CLINIC On Oct. 26, Central Saanich police will hold two simultaneous fingerprint clinics — one at the Peninsula Co-Op store on Keating Crossroad and the other at the Panorama Leisure Centre. Both will be held from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Parents wishing a videotaped record of their child are asked to bring a blank video-cassette.
