‘Assessment notice’ angers residents Several Saanich Peninsula resi- dents got on the phone to com- plain last week, after realizing that a Notice of Assessment they received was actually an election ploy by the Social Credit Party. Bobbie McConnell of Sidney was disgusted at this assessment thing. “1 don’t know what else to do but call you I’m so indignant,” she told The Review. “That could be really frighten- ing to people,” McConnell! said. She called former MLA Mel Cou- velier’s constituency office and was directed to call Social Credit headquarters on Cambie Street in ® Vancouver. McConnell said the response she received from headquarters was not Satisfactory. Saturday, Saanich North and The Islands Social Credit candi- date Richard Holmes called for the campaign chairman in Vancouver responsible for the Notice of Assessment to be fired. In an all candidates meeting broadcast on Shaw Cable 11 com- munity television Thursday even- ing, Holmes apologized for the notice and called it inflammatory and inappropriate. Other residents also called The Review office about the green- colored Notice of Assessment that lists $18,860 as the amount due and includes three payment plans including a $3,772 annual pay- ment of $314.33 per month for the next five years, Resident John MacKenzie of Orchard Avenue said the notice “is almost identical to a constant Magazine scam that’s been going on for 30 years where they send a bill and if you pay it, fine, if you don’t, it’s fine too.” MacKenzie says his eyesight is not perfect and he had to read the notice three times before he real- ized not to send money, “] think my parents would go right through the roof,” he said. “I know for a fact if they had to come up with another 300 bucks a month, it’s heart attack time.” He questioned where the prov- ince’s debt came from and won- dered if the “fraud squad” could investigate and lay charges. Bazan Bay resident Phyllis Head said the notice “hits straight PRESSING THE NOZZLE gingerly was the name of the game for young people who were encouraged to ‘gel a feel for using a fire extinguisher Saturday at North Saanich’s Wain Road firehall.
