_¢ Power Smart Advenising Supplement Power Smart has big impact on energy scene Power Smart, one of the world’s leading electric utility energy effi- ciency programs, is having a major impact on the Canadian energy scene. Developed at a cost of $15 million by B.C. Hydro and launched over two and a half years ago, it’s changing purchasing habits and the energy ethics of Canadians right across the country. There are now 13 major Cana- dian electric utilities using the programs. Czechoslovakia has also joined PSI. Five major energy agencies adopted the programs there, fol- lowing visits to the country by PSI officials. In B.C., Power Smart has been a driving force in the electrical goods marketplace. Before its advent, the market for Correcting moisture problems in the home If you observe more than a slight condensation on your win- dows, you need to take steps to reduce moisture and increase ven- tilation. That means first reducing pro- duction_of moisture. Avoid hang- -- ing wet laundry indoors. Don’t store or dry wood ‘indoors. Discon- nect humidifiers. Don’t leave lids off cooking pots. Install deuble or triple-glazed windows and ensure walls and ceilings are insulated. a aS compact fluorescent lights, which use 70-80 per cent less energy than incandescent lights of the same brightness, was virtually non-existent. Of all the refrigerator models for sale in B.C. prior to Power Smart, only a very small number were actually energy efficient by Power Smart standards. “The picture’s changed entirely,” says Janet Benjamin, PSI’s director of marketing. “Now 80 per cent of new fridge sales are for Power Smart models and the market for compact fluor- escents has sky-rocketed.” Since the start of Power Smart, fridge rebates have been further adjusted to focus on the top ten per cent of energy-efficient models and lowered for the mid range ones to encourage movement towards the top end. “We're in the business of not only changing people’s ethical considerations when it comes to buying Power Smart products, we are also in the business of working with major North American man- ufacturers to encourage them to provide energy efficient prod- ucts,” stated Benjamin. Recent examples include three major Christmas light manufactur- ers. Noma and Alderbrook of Ontario, and Universal of Quebec, have put the Power Smart Iogo on their packaging. “One firm in Surrey, has devel- oped a compact fluorescent light in the People’s Republic of China for retailing in North America. “It ll be selling for around $10 - — about half the usual price for similar products. Given the attrac- tive rebates some PS] members _ typically offer on these Products, : ‘the custoniers are the big win- ners,” said Benjamin. One of PSI’s roles is to make the 25 programs developed by Hydro, available to its members. “Not all programs involve peo- ple being encouraged to buy some- thing energy efficient. We have one that gives away kits for homes with electric hot water heating. It includes a low-flow showerhead and an insulating blanket for the hot water tank,” said Benjamin. “Low-flow showerheads are, in most cases, utterly simple to fit. Theyre cheap for us to give away and give immediate energy sav- ings. They reduce shower flow by about half and yet the user still gets a good shower.” At the other end of the scale, Power Smart is encouraging indus- try to use high-efficiency electrical motors which consume enormous amounts of energy. “Power Smart industrial electric motors offer tremendous energy savings. “Something like 40 per cent of all high-efficiency motor sales in B.C. are now in this category. Our program has even caught the atten- tion of a major U.S. manufac- turer,” said Benjamin. Baldor Electric of Fort Smith, Arkansas, recently signed up to be able to put the Power Smart logo on its high efficiency electric mot- ors which sell in Canada. The company was rated the “leading” industrial electric motor manufacturer in a poll of industry magazines. “Having Baldor on board lends a great deal of credibility to PSI in its dealing south of the border,” Benjamin says “you have to look at the big picture’? when considering the overall impact of an energy conservation movement. PSI’s Canadian membership includes: B.C. The Restaurant and Food Ser- vices Association of B.C. is urging British Columbians to use energy wisely during October and to take advantage of the candle light spe- cials as symbolic support for energy conservation. “This is a case in which rom- ance and idealism go snugly hand- in-hand,” said George Acs, presi- dent of the association. “There is something inexplica- bly romantic about dining by can- dle light and: what better way is there to celebrate energy conserva- tion than to switch off the lights and let the soft glow of candles illuminate your dining partner and a sumptuous meal.” “I’m hoping that thousands of JUMPING FOR JOY is B.C.
