Hydro’s energy Savings programs. Big electric utilities are gener- ally “the only game in town” in their service areas, and they like to do things in their own way. So Hydro, confident it was onto something exceptional when Power Smart was set up in 1989, was pleased to find other utilities willing to buy in to its energy- savings ideas. So strong was the interest that a whole new industry has been created. In 1990 Power Smart Inc. (PSI) was formed as a subsidiary of B.C. Hydro. PSI licenses the complete Power Smart package to other utilities and provides consulting expertise on how to tailor the programs to their own markets. Arthur Geikie, president of PSI, Said there is no question that Power Smart is becoming widely known and “very highly thought of” internationally. A number of US. utilities are interested in becoming members. The most recent Canadian utili- ties to join PSI were Winnipeg Hydro, City of Calgary Electric, and New Brunswick Power. PSI is working on a series of training programs for utilities in TheReview Wednesday, October 16,1991 — A25 Nanaimo challenges Dartmouth to save energy The cities of Nanaimo and Dart- mouth, N.S., are competing in a Power Smart Challenge over a two week period ending tomorrow. Mayor Joy Leach of Nanaimo issued the challenge, which was taken up by her counterpart in Dartmouth, to determine which community can achieve the largest energy Savings. City hall staffs also will be tested on their energy awareness. The challenge is one of the highlights of Power Smart October which is being observed through- out B.C. and in a number of jurisdictions across Canada. It will culminate in the observ- ance of Power Smart Night, Thurs- day, when consumers across Can- ada will be asked to tum off all cess when it was held in B.C. last year,’ Geikie said. “ Awareness of B.C. population was 76 per cent, with just over 50 per cent actual participation.” “Given that Power Smart pro- grams are now in nine provinces and territories, we consider this an opportunity to create an intense awareness of energy efficiency on a national scale.” Other cross-country challenges will match energy-savings of the Pacific Biological Station at Departure Bay and the Bedford Oceanographic Institute in: Nova Scotia; and CHUB Radio in Nan- aimo and radio station CFDR in Dartmouth. Within B.C. there are energy saving challenges between Vic- toria and Saanich, and Prince George and Kamloops. The results will be announced Friday.
