News Options explored during recycling month October has been proclaimed Recycling Month by the province and the Capital Regional District, leading to a number of activities planned for the Peninsula. One objective of the campaign is {0 encourage municipal partici- pation in activities to reduce waste, reuse materials and recycling in order to increase community awareness of recycling options. Another goal is to encourage school groups and the public to participate in promoting activities so that everyone learns more about waste management. Recycling Month activities include workshops, school visits, tours and fairs. An “Eco-Fair” will be set up in Victoria malls on weekends, including the CanWest Mall on Saturday and Sunday and the Tilli- cum Mall Oct. 26 and 27. A Sidney company — Elleham- mer Industries Ltd. — is involved in a “Meet Your Recycler Cam- paign.” A mobile backyard composting demonstration is scheduled for Oct. 19 at Thrifty’s in Sidney. Times are from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. noon, and from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Beef bids high Bids were high at the sale of 4-H prize winning beef at the Saanich Fair this year. Show Grand Champion Kree, a 1140 pound Angus steer shown by Theresa Harris was sold for $1.75 a pound to Thrifty Foods. Reserve Grand Champion C.G., a 1,050 pound Angus steer shown by Debbie Samaroo, was sold to Thrifty Foods for $1.07 a pound. Kathie Wilson’s 1,080 pound Angus steer was sold to Island View Freezer for 97.5 cents a pound. Peninsula Co-op paid $1.22.5 cents a pound for a 1,100 pound Maine/Anjou cross steer shown by Mark Verhagen. Kevin Wensley paid $1.05 a pound for a 990 pound Angus steer shown by Chris Wilson. Keirsti Finholm’s 1,190 pound Shorthom cross steer brought 95 cents a pound from Thrifty Foods. The grand champion winner in the commercial steer show, Reimer, a 1,125 pound Maine/ Anjou cross raised by Michelle Passmore, brought $1.19 a pound : from Victoria Tire. Kim Kennedy received $1.19 a pound from Island View Freezer for her 1,055 pound Shorthorn Steer. Thrifty Foods paid $1.10 a pound for a 1,365 steer shown by Shawn Verhagen.
