«Sports TheReview Wednesday, October 9, 1991 — A27 by Girard Hengen The Review It was a tough week on the soccer field for two local’ high school soccer teams. The Stelly’s Stingers senior ai boys split a pair of games, soundly fe ey | / ogee defeating Peninsula-rival Parkland Panthers 4-1 last Tuesday. However, this big win was fol- lowed Thursday by a 4-0 defeat at the hands of a powerful team from St. Michael's University School. Meanwhile, the Panthers also dropped their second game of the week to the Oak Bay Bays by a score of 4-0. Stelly’s win over Parkland was their first in four games. Like their earlier losses, Stelly’s was able to control much of the midfield action. Coach Ralph White admits it was an important game for a team he has just inherited. “It’s a rivalry, sure. Stelly’s versus Parkland versus Claremont. Theyre all in the same (School) division, and there’s definitely a rivalry,” he said. White’s on-field coaching was complicated by his rule that all players who try out get to play. On Tuesday, that meant he had to get 27 bodies into the action. “We saw a lot of enthusiasm. All players participate. We had 27 kids show up and they all played:...If these kids come out, theyre going to play, for the most part.” Scoring the goals for Stelly’s were Ben Nolin, George White, Jason Elder and Ryan Leask. White singled out the play of Stelly’s defencemen Gerrit Vink and Phil Tom, and the midfield work of Jon DeReus, as keys in the VICtOry. Stelly’s opened the scoring and was up 2-1 at the half. Parkland coach Joe Milligan said mistakes at critical times in the game - allowed Stelly’s players to walk in and score. He said his team had chances to - even the count in the second half, but “we just lacked the finish to tie the game.” : Parkland was missing two key players, “and that really hurt us,” he added. The Panthers were winless after their first three games, but Milli- gan said the team was not discour- aged. “It’s a really tough league,” he said, noting each year Greater Victoria teams are contenders for the provincial title. Parkland girls outrun the competition The Parkland Panthers girls’ eross country team has a running Start on the field after the first meet of the season. A strong overall team effort at a Sept. 30 meet propelled the girls to a first-place showing in the team competition: “They beat Claremont, and Claremont is supposed to be ranked number one,” said coach Jesse Witte. The Panther girls had 33 points after the run, held at Beacon Hill Park. Claremont was second with 51, followed by St. Michael’s University School with 101. Parkland was led by Sarah Thornber, a Grade 11 student who outpaced the field in the 2,500- metre race. Her time of seven minutes, 56 seconds put her ahead of defend- ing champion Shannon Bowles of Claremont. Parkland’s Kristi Gregory was fifth, while Jeannette Vandenbulk was sixth and Caroline Morris took seventh. In boys’ action, Parkland was fifth with 114 points, while Stel- ly’s was sixth, two points back, with 116. Darryl Stensaker was the top Panther, finishing 13th.
