V8L 3S1 by Valorie Lennox The Review Elena Khlebina couldn’t keep away from Canada. Last year the 17-year-old Rus- sian exchange student enjoyed her stay in the country so much, she and her family arranged for her to retum for a second year at Park- land Secondary. One draw might be the waterme- lon. Her host family — John and Sherry Dorman, five-year-old Daryl and seven-year-old Stepha- nie — still tease Elena about the watermelon she ate almost single- handed in the first few days after arriving from Russia. Fresh fruits and vegetables can be rare in Russia, Elena explains. Peaches can cost as much as 25 rubles for a kilogram. Meat ranges from 18 to 30 rubles per kilogram. The average salary in Russia is 400 to 450 rubles a month, Elena said. However some receive even less. “A lot of old people who are on a pension, they couldn’t buy any- thing,” Elena said. “If you want to buy sugar you have to have special coupons and stand in a long line.” Clothes are also expensive. Jeans cost 400 rubles and shoes cost 500 rubles. She is not surprised the short- ages sparked an attempted coup last August just before she left Russia. “Most people knew it would happen, something like this,” she said. During the coup, an 11 p.m. to5 a.m. curfew was in effect. Only one channel could be received on television, the newspaper was closed and the army entered Mos- cow. , “My dad was really worried,” Elena recalled. Her father, Boris Khlebin, is Director of Commerce and Industry for the Archexpo Centre. Elena was afraid the coup would prevent her leaving Russia as planned to start school at Parkland — and equally worried about leav- ‘It’s an exchange of traditions and two different lifestyles. At Parkland she can also take business courses which are not available in Russia. She also hopes to learn French. If Elena is learning, so are the Dormans. “We jumped at the opportunity to host a Russian student and we're lucky we got Elena,” John said. “It’s an exchange of traditions and two different lifestyles. It’s a cultural exchange for us,” he added. A major difference has been the amount of consumer goods availa- ble in Canada — and the accom- panying advertising which is unknown in Russia. John said Elena quickly picked up the significance of the advertis- ing — but is still sometimes overwhelmed by the many choices available in the stores. “Tn Russia, if you have some- thing you need, you go and you buy,” Elena explained. “Here it takes all day, you see so many things.” She also thinks Canadians are generally happy.
