B > = News TheReview Wednesday, October 9,1991 — A5 small diesel spill too thin for Coast Guard to launch cleanup A spill of diesel fuel from a sunken liveaboard boat in Tsey- hem Harbour Thursday was deemed by the Coast Guard to be too small to clean up: The Coast Guard was called to the government wharf at the har- bor on Thursday morning, said district manager Alec Provan. Emergency officials investigated and estimated about 23 litres spil- led out of a liveaboard, which Started sinking in the early mom- ing hours, he said. “There was only a minute amount of diesel spilled,” said Provan. “It certainly didn’t justify the expense of conducting a cleanup.” He said the fuel had spread too thin to skim by the time Coast Guard officials were at the scene. The owner of the vessel tried to pump water out before it sank too deep. He was not hurt in the incident. The boat was lifted by inflated tubes underneath, and water was pumped out later in the morning. Provan said people are prohib- ited by law from discharging oil and fuels into the sea, but no charges are expected in this inci- dent because the owner is not seen as being at fault and because the amount involved is small. He said the Coast Guard receives one or two calls per day about pollution in waters. In most cases, investigators are unable to locate a source. Often the spill is too small or too spread Out to undertake an effective cleanup, he said. Tim Melville, owner of Bosun’s Charters on Harbour Road near the government dock, said much of the spill dissipated from the source Stereo stolen Coming home after a nice din- ner was anything but pleasant fora resident of the 7000-block Bren- twood Drive Saturday. About $2,000 worth of Sony stereo equipment including a CD player, an amplifier, turntable and speakers was gone, Central Saa- nich police said. “They had returned from dinner and noticed the stereo missing,” deputy Chief George Lawson said. The locked house had been entered through a small side win- dow sometime between 3:45 p.m. and 9 p.m. and was carried into his marina. He said it still smelled strong on Friday. He said he understands why the Coast Guard felt a cleanup wasn’t necessary. But he adds the Coast Guard should be prepared to act quickly with small-scale equip- ment that can operate in a marina should a cleanup be needed. Provan said the Coast Guard has this type of equipment, but it does not work well on thin surface contamination.
