D , Gardening TheReview Wednesday, October 9,1991 — All Back now from our short holi- day with a few impressions of flowers which bloom at this time of year. My daughter and I spent over an hour roaming through Minter Gardens gleaning a few ideas. 2 Cosmos, for example, does beautifully for months on end, and, even later, when it dies, will provide food for some of the tiny birds who hand upside-down to eat its seeds. Another gorgeous annual that will seed itself is the Gloriosa daisy which is a wonderful addi- tion to any autumn garden. This is also known as Rudbeckia. Another much loved fall bloomer is called Gaillardia. It also has spectacular flowers rang- ing from warm yellow through to a brownish red and it, too, loves the sun. Fall asters come in many heights, and many colors, and are perennially lovely each autumn. Chrysanthemums, as most of us know, are at their best from now until frost, and they, too, come in many shades and differing heights. Some people are allergic to goldenrod but if you aren’t affected by its pollen it makes an attractive addition to any autumn showing. Small shrubs that will flower now and for some months are the heathers, one of them being Erica vulgaris Johnsonii, which is a lavender-pink, or ‘aureafolia’ which has yellow foliage and white flowers. The dahlias are still going strong, as are both tuberous and fibrous begonias, but this probably is due to our wonderful weather. Just give us a few days of rain and we ll soon find out which of these lovelies will still hold up his/her head. _ -Geraniums will go down for sure. If you are hoping to save some of your best ones, as soon as it starts to rain, dig as many as you think you will need, and then adda few extra (this is called insur- ance!). Nip out all flowers, and pot these up, three to a two gallon pot. Water them well, and sit them on newspaper (in the gar- age?)...somewhere where they won't freeze, and where they will get at least some light during the (dare I say it?) winter. A woman today was most anx- ious about a pothos plant that is hanging high up in an atrium. It has stems that must be six feet long, and these are losing leaves SPRING BULBS ARE HERE Fall’s flowers are still in bloom from the central part of plant on down, although the foliage at the ends of the vines remains lush and green. It appears that this pothos needs a larger pot, fresh soil, and a creative hair-cut...a shearing, really, making sure that there is a leaf node remaining at the end of Continued on Page A12 Just give us a few days of rain and we'll soon find out which of these lovelies will still hold up his/her head.’ — & “FAMILY SIZED” $279,900 “TWO BATHROOMS” $124,900 This adult-oriented condo isjusta This custom built Dean Park eFall Rye «Bone Meal ¢Bird Seed ePerennials Fall Mums e Winter Pansies “Friendly, Knowledgable Service” BRENTWOOD BAY INURSERIES LTD. 1395 Benvenuto Ave. : (Turn off to Butchart Gardens SERVING THE ENTIRE PENINSULA 652-1507 HOURS: Mon.-Sat. 9a.m.-5:30p.m. Sun. 10a.m.-5p.m. OPEN SUNDAYS _ short walk away from the library, Sidney’s shops, bus route and the seniors center.
