Man jailed for impaired

A 34-year-old Saanichton man who drove off a snow-covered
highway was jailed for 21 days after pleading guilty to impaired
driving.

Richard Paterson was westbound on Highway One 23 miles east
of Revelstoke on March 7 when he drove his pick-up truck off the
toad into the ditch at about 9:25 p.m., Crown counsel Stephen
Fudge said in Sidney provincial court Sept. 26.

A following transport truck driver helped two men out of the
pick-up and contacted police. Paterson had two breathalyzer
readings of .23 per cent, Fudge said.

Fudge noted Paterson has a previous record of impaired driving
convictions and served 24 days for his most recent conviction.

Defence lawyer Mayland McKimm said Paterson had developed
a drinking problem after his father’s death and accompanying
problems with the family business.

On March 7, Paterson was coming to Victoria to see his mother
and to enroll in the Comox Valley Recovery Centre, McKimm said.
Although Paterson was sober when he started the trip, he picked up
a hitchhiker and the two men began drinking.

Paterson has now completed the 10-week alcohol treatment
program at the Comox Valley centre, McKimm added.

Judge Wayne Smith said he would have imposed a longer jail
term than 21 days if Paterson had not taken steps on his own to
deal with the drinking problem.

Hit and run driver impaired

Drinking while fishing the day before heading out to do a
midnight paper route brought Gaston Bujold’s blood-alcohol level
to a breathalyzer reading of .25 and .26 per cent, Judge Wayne
Smith heard in Sidney provincial court Sept. 19.

The 55-year-old Brentwood resident pleaded guilty to driving
with a blood-alcohol reading over .08 per cent.

Crown counsel Stephen Fudge said a resident on Canora Road
reported his vehicle had been struck by a hit and run driver at
about 1 a.m. July 5.

Acting on a description of the suspect vehicle, police stopped
Bujold’s car at 1:10 a.m. on the Pat Bay Highway just south of
Tryon Road.

Damage to both vehicles totalled $3600, Fudge said.

Defence lawyer Barry Mah Ming said his client planned to
check on the other vehicle after finishing his paper route.

Judge Wayne Smith fined Bujold $350 and prohibited him from
driving for 12 months.

Business break-in

Park Road during an early mom-
ing break-in Oct. 2, Sidney RCMP
said.
