y News TheReview Wednesday, Oeisbez 9,1991 — AIT All candidates answer questions Continued from Page Al Reform Party candidate Don Hutchings personally felt abortion is a matter between a woman and her doctor. Social Credit candidate Richard Holmes suggested a province-wide referendum on the issue before government policy would be decided: Asked what percentage of lot- tery funds should go to health care, Hutchings recommended a prov- ince-wide referendum on the issue; McMurphy said 50 per cent - should go to health care; Tanner suggested lottery funds should be allocated by a non-partisan com- mittee instead of politicians and Holmes said almost half of the lottery funds are now going tow- ards preventative health measures like sports programs and medical research. Land and native issues drew : varied responses from candidates. Holmes said the agricultural land reserve needs to be preserved and B.C farmers supported — but was challenged by North Saanich Ald. Edo Nyland, who produced a 1990 application by Holmes to remove land from the land reserve. Holmes said the application had been to remove seven acres of class five and six lands from a 46 acre property. The site was to be used for affordable housing, . Holmes said. Tanner said the Liberals would negotiate with natives to establish a timetable for self-government resolve land disputes. Asked about current obstacles to proposed affordable housing developments on McDonald Park Road in North Saanich, McMurphy said an NDP govern- ment would provide cost-sharing for servicing low-income housing projects. Others measures would include eliminating the property purchase tax for first time home buyers and making public land available for housing. Tanner suggested a rent-to-own g- program administered by a B.C. housing agency. Holmes agreed with using pub- lic land for low-income housing. Hutchings thought provincial help should be available to provide sewer service for such housing projects. Asked about MLA salaries, McMurphy said they should be set by an independent commission, Hutchings said they should be decided just before an election but not implemented until after the election and Tanner said he would call for a 25 per cent cut in MLA salaries — generating a round of applause. “Why stop at 25, make it 100,” Holmes muttered, a comment @ which only increased the applause. Sidney. The provincial election date has thrown a wrench into the Saanich Peninsula Chamber of Com- merce’s plan for its annual general meeting. Meetings are normally held on the third Thursday of each month but Chamber manager Marilyn Lee recognized the potential for a low turnout for the Oct. 17 meet- ing because it is also election day. Hence, the date has been Chamber’s AGM changed changed to Oct. 24, 6 p.m. at Colombo’s in Saanichton, contra- ry tO an announcement in the Chamber’s regular newsletter. The meeting will feature the installation of new officers and a discussion about the new execu- tive’s objectives plans for the coming year.
