Interchange construction starting now

Construction of an interchange
at the intersection of Lands End
Road and the Pat Bay Highway is
due to start this week.

JJM Construction Limited is
currently constructing a connector
Toad between the new B.C. Ferries
parking facilities on the west side
of the highway and Lands End
Road as part of a contract with
B.C Ferry Corporation.

The Ministry of Transportation
will oversee drilling and’ excavat-
ing of the rock bluff on the west
side of the Pat Bay Highway north
of Lands End Road.

The rock bluff is being cut back
- about six metres to widen existing
lanes on the highway, which will
provide direct access to parking
and accommodate new lane align-
ments at Swartz Bay terminal. The
work was scheduled to start this
week, a Transportation Ministry
press release said.

In addition, hydro and telephone
service adjacent to the existing
highway will be relocated.

Barricades, signs and cones will
be in place to direct traffic, with
flagpeople directing motorists
while construction activity is
underway.

The first phase of the Lands End
interchange, which includes lower-
ing a section of the Pat Bay
Highway north of Land End Road
and building a bridge to carry
northbound traffic over the high-
way to the new parking facilities, is
scheduled for completion in the
summer of 1992.
