Strike delays request for flushing report Sidney aldermen want a clearer picture of water flushing action behind the breakwater before a public hearing on the proposed expansion of the Port Sidney Marina. Council voted to ask the federal Small Crafts Harbours Branch for a report on flushing during a meeting Sept. 9. Aldermen hope the report can be completed as soon as possible before the Oct. 7 public hearing on the marina’s controversial expansion plans. However, Small Crafts Harbours was hit by the Public Service Alliance of Canada strike, and an official says he is not sure the branch has enough time to respond with all the information council wants. “We were in a Strike situation and people were rather short,” said regional director John MeNally from Vancouver. “We'll try to get whatever infor- mation we have to Sidney,” he said. In council, Ald. Don Amos said floats in the marina divide the surface of the water, “but we don’t know what kind of underflow we get.” _ Ald. Bob Jones said a similar report was probably done before the breakwater was built, ‘but what is in those waters has perhaps changed.” He said a new report was needed. McNally said staff are reviewing the files on the port. Small Crafts Harbours will try to gather new information if it is required before the Oct. 7 meeting. He could not say whether new data could be collected in time. “Tl tell (council). whatever I can by the meeting date.” A second public hearing was called by council for legal reasons after a first was held in June. It was OPPORTUNITY TO CHANGE YOUR WHITE PAGES — deemed necessary after elected officials said they gathered more information on the project during a July tour of the Port and adjacent residences. Town staff said a rezoning bylaw could be declared invalid by the courts because this new informa- tion was not heard in an open, public forum. Granville West Capital Corp. is seeking approval to expand into the water area north of the present marina. Or Db 4G oy &” carn At Victoria Flying Club Open 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.n.
