Feature Classroom lessons lead lo hands- -on cling by Girard Hengen The Review You can teach a cadet everything he or she needs to know about life at sea, but it doesn’t really sink in until the cadet gets out on the water. Two, and sometimes three times a year cadets with the Sidney- based Admiral Budge Sea Cadet Core get a solid dose of hands-on experience. On Sept. 14, a group of them left Esquimalt aboard a Canadian Forces YAG vessel, a training ship where they literally learned the TOpes. “This is hands-on practical experience for the stuff they leam back in the classroom,” Lieut. (N) Alan Hoban, the commanding officer, said during exercises off Sidney’s waterfront. “Tt makes what they learn have a little more sense to them,” he said. “It’s a chance to be on board a small vessel and have some input in the operation of it.” The 14 cadets spent the night at Saltspring Island before returning Sunday. For Derek Viggers, a 14-year- old who has been in cadets for a year, the trip helps prepare him for what he hopes is a career in the Navy or with Military Police. Cecile Decurnex, 14, of Sidney, Says “it’s something to do and get involved in. There’s lots of activ- ity. “Tm going to be a cop. 'm doing this for training.” She said she hopes life with the cadet core will teach her to be more wits and tolerant of Sate GETTING TO THE source of a blaze are cadets with the Admiral Budge Sea Cadet Core during a recent training drill aboard a YAG vessel off Sidney's waterfront. drill. Cadets between the ages of 12 and 19 are put through drills, like a man overboard routine, when on the 23-metre ship. Other drills are steering gear breakdown, fire drill, accident simulation, manning life raft sta- tions in case they have to abandon ship, plus the odd bomb scare drill. They also learn navigation and control of the helm. & REALTY WORLD” THE RESULTS PEOPLE. AUTOPLAN AND PRIVATE INSURANCE — A WINNING COMBINATION! ! !
