News Aboui-face by coniractor angers aldermen Sidney’s garbage collection contract will be put up for public tender next year. Alpine Disposal and Recycling, the company which was to have taken over collection duties from another company, wanted changes to the contract. This word came after Sidney council was set to assign the contract to Alpine because Alpine earlier agreed to take it over from City Waste Systems without any changes. Alpine’s about-face raised the ire of some aldermen during a committee of the whole meeting on Sept. 16. Ald. Ted Daly noted the contract was awarded on tender to City Waste in January, 1990. On Jan. 1 this year, council agreed to increase it to compensate the com- pany for rising recycling costs. Daly said Alpine wrote the Town on June 24 and July 15 advising they would assume the contract as is from City Waste. On July 22, council gave condi- tional approval to transfer the con- tract without re-tendering it. “Now they want more,” only a month and a half later, Daly said. “If it’s not apparent, it makes me mad,” an agitated Daly told council. Rosequist said one police vehi- cle sustained about $500 damage in the interior by another youth. An 18 year old is to be charged with mischief in connection with this incident, and a further charge of wilful damage at the detach- ment 1s pending, he said. Damage was done to a holding cell, including a ripped mattress and a smashed smoke alarm pro- tector. “T think it’s disgusting that every Friday and Saturday night a certain group of youths in this community tum into animals from the use of drugs and alcohol, and create havoc with their behavior,” Rosequist said. and don’t know which. way to turn, call the Wetione Ngo. Daly suggested aldermen re- tender the contract, and that Alpine pick up the contract until then at the price originally agreed upon. At this pomt the debate, which had been going on for several minutes, was cut short because aldermen wanted to discuss it in closed session. Meeting in camera, committee of the whole decided to terminate the existing contract with City Waste and not reassign it to Alpine. The committee voted to negoti- ate a new contract with Alpine for the rest of 1991, and re-tender garbage collection for 1992. The committee recommenda- tions were approved by council Monday. ya PAMPER YOURSELF | TO: * Facials * Haircuts * Skincare * Make Up * Manicures * Massage Nutri Metics and Joico Skin and Hair Care Products TRICIA DAWN L 656-0124 | TheReview Wednesday, September 25, 1991 — Ad THE CORPORATION OF THE DISTRICT OF CENTRAL SAANICH 1903 Mt.
