News TheReview Call for interchange reversed, so council waits for safety suggestions by Glenn Werkman The Review Central Saanich is waiting for a report from the Ministry of Trans- portation outlining interim meas- ures to be taken to improve safety on the Pat Bay Highway from Tanner Road north to Mt. Council rescinded a Sept. 3 motion that called for the CRD’s regional services committee to ask Transportation Minister Lyall Han- son “in the strongest possible terms’’ for the immediate rein- Statement of the design and con- struction program for the intersec- tion at Island View Road. Mayor Ted Jones said council asked the ministry to look at various concerns and solutions including the possibility of stopp- ing off certain roads and increas- ing the length of tuming lanes. Ald. Gary Valiquette said he received some phone calls, includ- ing some from the traffic liaison committee, “and they’re all for it, they'd like to keep it moving.” Ald. Bruce Tobin said he shares: safety concerns but “Island View is more than a safety upgrade.” Tobin said ongoing planning should continue but there should be a halt to further work so it will not prejudice the outcome of the CRD committee’s two-year study. Ald. Ian Cameron said that no planning of how the interchange will impact on the municipality’s internal road structure has been done. “T would like to know the results of the change before they (start work),” Cameron said. “I’d just as soon have a study done.” Ald. Prime Minister Brian Mulron- TOWN OF SIDNEY ey’s Conservative government introduced legislation that would send the union members back to work. Saanich-Gulf Islands (NDP) MP Lynn Hunter said Monday the back-to-work legislation is flawed. She said the Public Service Staff Relations Board reported that the federal government has been not been bargaining in good faith and must return to the bargaining table. Hunter said the way the federal government is handling the strike is a “‘an insult to the whole concept of free collective bargain- ing.” The government’s offer includes no wage increase this year and a three-per-cent wage increase next year.
