Feature For Cook, any kind of plane will do by Girard Hengen The Review Wade Cook, an 18-year-old Saa- nichton student, just wants to fly planes. Military fighter jets or transport planes, or commercial passenger aircraft, it really doesn’t matter. He has already taken the first step to reaching his goal. Cook earned his cadet’s wings and a private pilot’s license after completing a power flying schol- arship course this summer at the Cadet Camp Pat Bay. Graduation and a wings parade for Cook and 25 other cadets took place under the watchful eye of reviewing officer Col. J.E.H. Gib- bon Friday at the camp on airport grounds. The ceremony, with proud rela- tives and friends watching, was held with typical military panache. Color and music was provided by the Naden Band of Maritime Forces Pacific. Cook and Hilary Harris, 17, also of Saanichton, of Sidney’s 676 Kittyhawk Squadron, were among the graduates. Cook said afterwards one of the reasons he joined cadets was to eam his pilot’s license. The Stelly’s Secondary School grad said he plans to join the forces fulltime to continue his flying. Only the cream of the crop become fighter jet pilots. Cook says this “would be nice, but...1’m willing to accept fighter or trans- port. All I want is to be a pilot. If they make me a pilot, ’'m happy. “If they give me a tour with the Snowbirds (precision aerobatic team) for a couple of years, that is the ultimate.” For Harris, who is beginning Grade 12 at Stelly’s, earning her wings “was difficult, but it was worth it. “This 1s what I’ve wanted for a long, long time.” She said she wanted to do more flying but hasn’t decided if it will become a career. Cadets undergo a rigorous Jumper broughi back fo shore Charges are not being laid against a 47-year-old Burnaby man who jumped from the Queen of Saanich’s Thursday sailing to Swartz Bay from Tsawwassen. The man was picked up by an American pleasure boat south of Active Pass, northeast of Sidney, about 2:55 p.m. Thursday, as the B.C. Ferry was nearing the termi- nal. “The man was in good condi- tion but suffering mild hypother- mia,” RCMP said. He was taken to Saanich Peninsula Hospital for observation. Police said the man jumped intentionally. screening process to be picked for the course. They received scholar- ships valued at $7,000. Harris said she was “shocked” to be selected. “Flying to me is the best part of cadets,” she said. Both Cook and Harris received 48 hours air training and 40 hours of classroom instruction during the intensive seven-week course. Like the other graduates, they have made about 20 solo flights in Cessna aircraft. The ceremony was an especially proud one for Col. Gibbon, who in 1989 became Chief of Staff Oper- ations, Maritime Forces Pacific. Reviewing the cadets marked his last duty in the forces after a 36-year stint. He began his avia- tion career on the same spot, “at that same brick building. “J feel privileged on my last day in the service to welcome a whole new group of pilots into the won- derful world of aviation,” he told the assembled. — : ARE. Sidney council wants to take a closer look at a proposed lease amendment for the Hotel Sidney which would enable it to moor its diving charter boat. The Hotel has applied to the Ministry of Crown Lands for the amendment to cover part of the water area beside the Hotel. Owner Denis Paquette said he wants to construct a new 30-metre breakwater and install floats for the charter boat. “We have to build our own (breakwater),”” he said, adding the floats would not be for public use. He said the facilities are needed because interest in diving in the Sidney area is expected to increase because of the sinking of the G.B. Church and creation of an artifi- cial reef near Portland Island. 24 HOUR SERVICE 7 DAYS A WEEK lf you have been drinking. . - Call my Uncle at MAXWELL’S TOWING and you and your car will get home safely, for only $30.00 plus G.S.T. anywhere on the Peninsula or Victoria. 655-4442 New mooring area examined Town staff recommended coun- cil ask the Ministry of Crown Lands to deny the application, but aldermen voted instead to refer the matter to its Committee C for further study.
