Three men face charges Three Sidney men face a variety of charges after police spotted a stolen vehicle being driven on Tatlow Road in North Saanich about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday. A 1977 Pontiac Grand Prix atken from the Pat bay Esso on Mt. Newton Crossrad was stopped on Tatlow near Horth Hill Regional Park before one of the suspects fled into the bush. A police dog was called in and located Paul DesJardins, 24, who is being charged with possession of stolen property and escaping lawful custody. The two other men, Wally Brown, 22, and Carl Reid, 24, are also charged with possession of stolen property and escaping law- ful custody, Sidney RCMP Cpl. Jake Bouwman said. The car was stolen earlier Wed- nesday. ae SCHOOL CUTS Continued from Page Al Desai said the music program at Stelly’s will likely not be offered in the first semester but may be offered in the second semester. A science and technology course, requested by over 50 stu- dents, has been cut and honors and regular classes have been com- bined in math, English and social studies, Desai said. Desai also cited a significant reduction in learning assistance services at Stelly’s. At Parkland Secondary, all of the core curriculum classes are full, Desai said. Nine elective courses were elim- inated by the cuts: marine studies 11, stagecraft 11 and 12, writing and directing 12, calculus 12, French 12A, German 12, account- ing 12, family management 12 and advanced directed studies 11. At North Saanich Middle School, metal art jewelry and peer counselling programs have been eliminated. Few students will be able to take woodwork, metalwork, food and guidance courses. The foods 8 and crafts 8 programs, offered by North Saanich Middle School as separate programs last year, have been com- bined into one program, Desai said. Cutbacks have been made to the guidance program and native edu- cation study skills program at Mt. Newton, Desai added. Trustee Peter Shewnng regretted the loss of the honors courses at Stelly’s, the reduction in trades courses and the loss of the locally developed calculus 12 course at Parkland Secondary. At Claremont Secondary, metal of counselling and one writing and direction 12 class have been elimi- nated. An electronics program, requested by 21 students, was cut as was drafting 11/12, although some students will be scheduled into a drafting 9/10 course. Due to staff shortages, some girls’ P.E. classes will be instructed by male teachers, Desai noted. May 13 the board ordered all schools to trim their budgets by 10 per cent and cut teacher staffing by eight per cent. The cuts were. to remove a $2.66 million deficit in the 1991-92 budget, which was caused in part by the settlement between the district and the Saanich Teachers’ Association. The contract, final- ized after a two-week strike in March, included a 14 per cent salary increase over two years.
