Middle school delayed The new Central Saanich mid- dle school likely won’t be com- pleted in time for the scheduled September 1992 opening, school superintendent Hank Stefaniak admitted at a school board meet- ing Monday. Construction of the school, orig- inally slated to start in March on a Gowdy Road site, was delayed by a native blockade at the original site, the selection of an alternate site on Wallace Drive and municipal requirements to rezone the alter- nate site, Stefaniak said. No plans had been made yet for students who would have entered the new school next September, but Stefaniak said the district will have a better idea of the overall situation in December. Monday the school board voted to vigorously pursue recovery of the additional costs incurred by the district in relocating the school Gas used at Gasoline was poured onto refuse by a resident of 10327-Resthaven Dr. to start a garbage fire on the banks of Roberts Bay about four minutes to 9 p.m. Friday, Sidney RCMP said. from Gowdy Road to Wallace Drive. The board abandoned construc- tion on the Gowdy Road site, originally purchased from the fed- eral government, after local natives laid claim to the property. A recommendation that the new school be named the Central Saa- nich Middle School was rejected by the board in favor of inviting students, teachers and parents to contribute possible names, The board committee was directed to develop a process involving the community in order to chose a name for the school. The board also approved a motion requesting a $569,750 let- ter of credit from the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce. The letter of credit is to serve as a bond to cover the cost of off-site ser- vices for the new school. beach burn resulted woke the neighborhood and sent the Sidney volunteer fire department around with a pumper truck. Three dancers took top honors in the dancing category of the Chief Seattle Days Celebration, with seven-year-old Ian Sam cap- turing first place in the seven to 11-year-old’s traditional dance event. Danny Norris Jr, 11, took second place in the seven to 11- year-old’s fancy dance event and Lori Henry, 17, placed third in the fancy dance category for ages 16-49. Mary Wagner placed first in the women’s traditional dance. In the drummer’s competition the Thunderbirds won a very grati- fying second place. The Aug. 17- 18 event drew eight drum groups plus about 175 dancers, including 22 dancers who participated from Saanich, Chief Joe Henry said. The Saanich Thunderbird Drummer Club is in its third summer and was very popular at the recent First People’s Cultural Festival at the Royal B.C. Museum. Most members are from the Tsart- lip band. Saanich elder Ben Paul said: “We try to get the kids interested to keep our pride strong as Indian people. “Tt is important for us to main- tain a sense of identity. It gives them a sense of pride, recognition, raises self-esteem and gives a better image to people they are dealing with,” Paul said. Instructors encourage dancers to express their own style, whether it is in the fancy dance or traditional. Dancing also encourages the four basic life directions — physi- cal, emotional, psychological and spiritual, he said. “Tt gives them a way of life and avoids the occasion of alcohol- ism,” Paul said.
