Activities include sports, crafts, weekly field trips, Urgent need to protect beaches for the whales by Andy Bigg Special to The Review With ever-increasing public interest in killer whales, the urgent need for their environmental pro- tection, and such recent spectacu- lar documentary films as Swim- ming with Whales and Beautful Killers, the dire need for every member of the public to demand ultimate action has come. Both levels of government must immediately disallow further risk of endangering the habitat and lifestyle of these magnificent crea- tures by the constant encroach- ment of logging activity in the region of the rubbing beach at Robson Bight. Although I do not profess to represent any specific organization I do wish to be considered as a strong voice of the non-scientific, non-academic, non-political, non- business, non-industrial and non- profit motivated members of the general public. My interest is solely aimed at the permanent protection of the now world famous and irreplacea- ble “rubbing beach.” As father of the late Dr. Michael Bigg, acclaimed as the “father of killer whale research,” I offer my personal opinion regarding such protection. It has not yet been discovered exactly why the hundreds of killer whales visit the magical rubbing beach every year. The area is unique on this planet, and from the fascinating underwater films taken in the recent past one cannot help but observe the delight the whales derive from being able to rub their bodies on the pebbles on the ocean floor. If, over the course of the next 20, 50 or 100 years the pebbles on the rubbing beaches become covered by a buildup of siltation caused by present day clear-cutting adjacent to’ the Bight just why would the whales want to visit the area? Are we anxious to have future generations point accusing fingers at us with the comment “It was you people, the logging compa- nies, and particularly the politi- cians of the 1990°s, who were responsible for the elimination of the killer whales at Robson Bight, because you were too disinterested to act when you still had the chance.” Peninsula Video Productions Complete S-VHS & VHS Production Facilities eS) =I CHI Bl TO VHS TAPE up to 1000 FEET 1000 - 2000 FEET 2000 - 3000 FEET aks e osgiroct| 090-143 08¢/FOOT © UP TO 4 TRACKS OF BD ADDED — NO a ARGE BE CHARGED A We have to ask, are we really going to permit MacMillan Bloe- del to log the area below cut-block 101? In the name of all that nature holds sacred, let us all act now to preserve a priceless treasure that exists within our midst, for, within weeks, or af the very most, the next few months, it may -well be too late! In my opinion, once cut-block 102 has been clear-cut all you can expect from the logging company will be a “Trudeau salute” plus a promise from the provincial gov- ernment to “set up another com- mittee to study the matter.”!
