DAYS ARE NUMBERED for the old boatworks building at the
foot of Marchant Road in Brentwood Bay. Central Saanich
council recently gave approval in principle to a develop-
ment variance permit, lowering the required side and front
yard setback requirements to allow residential develop-
ment to occur. The owners, Frank and Vera Wille of Victoria,
intend to build two single family homes on the Brentwood
Drive-Marchant Road lots, each with about 2,500 square
feet of living space. However, before making a decision,
staff prepared a report on building a waterfront walkway in
front of the property, on the insistence of several council
members. Council found that a waterfront walkway from
Marchant north to Verdier Avenue seems impossible. The
agent for the owners, realtor Garry Bentham, told council
that landowners north of Marchant are not willing to
provide property for a walkway. Couneil will likely give final
approval after they receive a staff report including neigh-
bors comment

Of those, 3,220 were homosex-
uals-bisexuals, 166 intravenous
drug users, 60 hemophiliacs, 197
heterosexuals contacts, 16 prosti-
tutes, 70 multiple blood transfu-
sion recipients and 980 for which
the risk category was not speci-
fied.

The minister stressed that the
number of positive test results
should not be confused with actual
cases of AIDS. To date, there have
been 971 cases of AIDS in British
Columbia since the first case was
reported in January 1983, and of
this group, 638 have died.

Current estimates of persons
infected with the AIDS virus
ranges from 5,000 to 8,000.

Pre-election swing

With a general election probably
less than two months away, NDP
leader Mike Harcourt continued
his travels across the province. His
latest pre-election tour took him
on a swing through Vernon, Arm-
strong, Enderby, Salmon Arm and
Revelstoke.

In a joint announcement, the
federal and provincial govern-
ments last week announced plans
for the construction of a new
multi-level care facility for veter-
ans to be built in Saanich, near
Victoria.

The new facility will be based
On an innovative concept of pro-
viding a total of 225 beds within
six relatively self-contained
lodges. The estimated cost of $22
million will be shared equally by
the two governments.

Careful with fires

Fires cost the taxpayers millions
of dollars every year in lost timber
and fire suppression, a loss British
Columbia can ill-afford, Forest
Minister Claude Richmond said
last week.

Urging the public to be
“extremely careful’ with the
province’s forests, the minister
said that so far this year, more than
1,000 forest fires have been
reported, of which 668 were cause
by people and 333 by lightening.
