re ; _eports _™Review Wednesday, August 7, 1991 — A21 “New physical education gets failing grade, says Sport B.C. by Roy Mcintosh Chairman, Sport B.C. Nintendo games and VCR’s are formidable opponents for today’s parents. But when the provincial education system conspires with electronic entertainment to cheat ‘our children of an active lifestyle, its time to raise the red flag. Part of it is the times we live in. Increased traffic in large cities probably makes it less safe for children to ride bikes, than it was for their parents. Parental concem over gangs and sex-offenders, result in children being driven to and from school activities. Spontaneous play any- where but the backyard rarely occurs before adolescence. The public is aware of this problem. ~ A 1989 Gallup poll determined that: 94 per cent of the adult population think physical educa- tion in schools is important, 67 per cent thinking it is very important. Over half (61.8 per cent) of Cana- dians feel physical education is as important or more important than subjects like math and reading. Surprisingly, this message has ~ not been received by those leading our provincial education system. If implemented, the new curriculum outlined in the Ministry of Educa- tion’s “Year 2000” documents will provide youngsters with only 50 hours of PE. classtime per year. One hundred hours per year is a bare minimum. : Intense academic programs which need more time, often get the time at the expense of physical education. University entrance requirements are forcing students to neglect the physical side of their development in hopes of nudging their academic marks a notch higher. French immersion elemen- tary students have less physical education than their English-only counterparts. During the most stressful times of the academic year, examination periods, universities and colleges routinely use gymnasiums and —g field houses for writing exams. p- e Quality intramural and extra- mural school sport programs are the result of passionate, committed coaches rather than a planned and reasoned province-wide strategy. And these programs delivered by teachers during their volunteer hours are the first casualties of labor disputes. Why is it that physical education, physical activ- ity, and sport seem to occupy the lowest position on the academic totem pole? The late Barry Sullivan’s rec- ommendation in his 1988 Royal Commission Report: Legacy for Learning, remains unheeded.
