Ar se Outdoors Forty tons of cabbages! 60 tons! The early run of Coho failed to tur up in the Strait of Georgia. Nor in Juan de Fuca. Cabbages and Coho. Could there be a con- nection? Only the de*il knows for sure and he’s no tellin’. Mary and I stopped in at the Michell farms on Island View Road for fresh vegetables and fruit and I struck up a conversation with Vern whose lineage there dates back to the 1800’s. “Fishing lately, Vern?” “No, but my friends tell me that the Coho are as scarce as hen’s teeth of late. Anyway, we’re awfully busy marketing produce these days. Even busier than we were two or three years ago with those special orders.” “Special orders?” “Yes, orders for the Russian factory fishing ships out in the Pacific. The Japanese are there, too.” “What were they buying?” “Cabbages, believe it or not. Forty tons at a whack!” “Woww! Some of those ships are using nets 25 miles long, or more. I’ve read that they sweep up enormous amounts of sea life and process what they want aboard. Several nations are very concermed about the potential impact on commercial fishing.” “T’ve heard that, too.” “It seems to me that a practice like that could really raise havoc with an industry. I wonder how many forms fail to reach maturity - and spawn.” “Hey, maybe the missing Coho are part and parcel of the equa- tion!” “Right. Well have tae ask th’ de’il next time we see im; I’m on pretty good speaking terms wi’ the Tascal.”” A ge ON THELOOKOUTFOR COHO TheReview Wednesday, August 7,1991 — A13 For years, fishermen have kept their eyes upon cruising glaucous- winged and Bonaparte gulls since they often lead them to where the salmon are feeding, At the moment, pinks and a few coho are showing up in the general Sooke area around Secretary Island, Race Rocks, ‘the Bluffs,’ and Otter Point. Fishing has been excellent at Port Renfrew with a good run of sizeable Chinooks and smaller coho. Tiny, dark-legged Western San- dpipers are showing up along the shores en route to winter quarters. Chris Reid, Begbie, notes that handsome Harlequin ducks have made their appearance at Ft. Rodd Hill. Unexpectedly, we encoun- tered goodly numbers of these ducks breeding in the Yukon last year as far north as the Dempster Highway. Bushtits are already congregat- ing in their customary summer flocks after rearing their broods. These active little mites gather insect pests by the legion as they flit from copse to copse.
