= LS Wednesday, July YOUTHS ENJOY ICE cream Saturday at country market Ban protects agriculture market Those in favor of a potato- growing ban in Central Saanich Say it muUSt Stay intact to protect all B.C. and Canadian agricultural and horticultural industries. “There’s a huge issue at stake here,” said John Kaye, a North Saanich nursery owner who ships produce off the Island. Removing the ban could spell disaster for farmers and horticul- turists who depend on exports because of the possibility that markets will refuse their produce, he said. The ban was imposed by Ottawa because the golden nematode was found in Central Saanich. The pest threatened exports of Canadian agricultural produce to the US. Kaye said the U.S. and countries worldwide are anxious to stop the spread of the nematode, which is transmitted in soil. Lifting the ban could put a “tainted label” on all B.C. and Canadian products, he said. “The attitude of all officials, whether Canadian or American, is that (the nematode) just has to be contained wherever it is found so it is not a detriment to agriculture and horticulture,” said Kaye. “It is a huge area that could be affected (if the ban was removed), and it’s unfortunate a few potato growers are affected, but the hematode must be contained to protect hundreds of millions of dollars in business in Canada.” Kaye attended a closed-door meeting July 2 to discuss the issue attended by local farmers, repre- sentatives of producer organiza- tions and provincial and federal government officials. Some of the producer groups included the B.C. Nursery Trade, the B.C. Certified Seed Growers Association, the B.C. Vegetable Marketing Commission, the B.C. Coast Vegetable Co-operative and the Island Vegetable Co-operative. Kaye represented B.C. and Cana- dian nursery associations. Al Oliver, a Vancouver-based Agriculture Canada official who chaired the meeting, said many of the groups spoke in favor of the ban. “They see a large potential dam- age to their industries,” he said. The nematode “‘is of great inter- national concem and therefore has an impact on trade throughout the world.” Nidus Gallery APPETIZERS “A Taste of Local Art” JUNE 21 - JULY 25 ‘FLYING COLOURS’ “World Class Aviation Artists” JULY 26 - AUGUST 11 Internat'l Air Show Aug. 5 featuring Terrance D.
