Wage equity is social problem Failure of the provincial Social Credit government to produce wage equality for women is lead- ing to massive social problems in the province, Saanich North and the Islands NDP candidate Elsie furphy said Thursday. ommenting on recent Statistics Canada figures showing the income of B.C. men is almost double that of B.C. women, McMurphy said the result is that many more women and children are living in poverty. “The huge wage gaps, combined with the highest marriage break- down rate in Canada, are leaving > more children in poverty,’ McMurphy said. Statistics Canada figures show the number of children living in poverty has increased to 89,000 from 62,000 during the last decade. Al Kratz was elected president of the fledgling constituency asso- ciation Thursday night. He said Monday once a certain number of memberships have been sold a nomination meeting will be called where a RPBC candidate will be selected. He would not say how many memberships are the goal, only that “the number-is something we have in our head. “All we want to do is get a set membership so that we know we have enough support,” he said. Kratz added the party is quickly reaching that goal and it may be possible to hold a nomination meeting before the end of the month, although the executive may decide to wait a bit longer. In addition to Kratz, David Wood was chosen vice-president, Man charged A 33-year-old Sidney man suf- fered minor hand injuries after his motorcycle was hit by a 1987 - Nissan Pathfinder driven by a 55-year-old Kamloops man. The mishap occurred June 26 at West Saanich Road and McTavish Road. Sidney RCMP said the Kam- loops man was southbound on West Saanich, making a left tum onto McTavish, when he struck the motorcycle, which was travelling north on West Saanich.
