Members of eight Greater Vic- toria police and justice depart- ments will be pounding the pave- ment Friday in a torch run to raise money for the B.C. Special Olym- pics. About 60 runners are expected to jog to Sidney Town Hall at 5 p-m. Friday to close the Law Enforcement Torch Run. The teams will cover a 50- kilometer route beginning at Mile 0 in Victoria. Each member of the eight-person team will run about a five-K stretch. Then all will gather for a mass run to the finish. After, a ceremony and barbecue will be held at Centennial Park. “It’s a friendly, competitive race, but the underlying factor is to raise money for Special Olym- pics,” said Cst. Jim Woolford of Central Saanich police, one of the race organizers. Tax deductible donations can be made at the Central Saanich department office on Mt. Newton Crossroad, or at the RCMP detach- ment in Sidney. Woolford said the run depends on the co-operation of the depart- ments and public generosity. “It’s the first time (organizing the run) for the Greater Victoria police forces...It’s an athletic event and it’s a worthwhile charity.” “We've been having a good response from our community to date,” added Const. Kim Horsman of Sidney RCMP. “It’s one of our bigger priorities because if we don’t go out and participate in events like this, a lot of special needs kids won’t be going to the Special Olympics. “It’s really something to see them when they attend.
