The dinner, held as part of Sidney’s Centennial celebration, is open to residents of Sidney and North Saanich who have lived in the area for 45 years or more. On Sunday, Beechwood Village will host a tea and fashion show for long-time residents starting at 2 p.m. at 2345 Mills Road, Sidney. This event is also open to those who have lived in the area for 45 years Or more. : A new event this weekend is the Summer Arts and Crafts show and sale at Sanscha Hall from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The show, organized by Chuck Harvey, is expected to draw local residents and to attract those in town over the weekend for the Army, Navy and Air Force 302 convention. The convention will also draw on Sidney’s Centennial with the Peninsula Celebrations Society offering a tour to Saanich Penin- sula museums and historic sites for convention participants. The convention starts with a meat draw, president’s meeting and dance Friday night, followed by meetings Saturday and a meat draw and dance Saturday night. Outside activities include the craft fair at Sanscha Hall, the historic tours and hamess racing at the Sandown Race Track. The A.N.A.F club will be open to members and guests starting at 3:30 p.m. Saturday. The A.N.A.E has donated $1,000 towards the Peninsula Celebrations Society’s Centennial and Sidney Days events. Proponents and opponents of the expansion — some braving cat- calls and boos, others being greeted by roars of approval — . took part in a verbal exchange of volleys during a Monday night public meeting in Sidney. About 250 people packed the Silver Threads hall, with some in the standing-room-only crowd Standing outside the doorways, straining to hear what was going on. Many supported Granville West president Kim Pullen, who said a bigger port would enhance tourism in Sidney, attract people to the waterfront and provide spin-off economic benefits to town busi- nesses. He said the company goes “to great lengths” to ensure the port is environmentally sensitive. Noting Sidney was celebrating its 100th anniversary, Kirk Lunde, a Third Street resident, said: “The best birthday present you (alder- men) can give Sidney is to say no to any Port of Sidney expansion and no to rezoning our waterfront. “Our town folk are more important than tourists.” The meeting was called to hear public input into the Town’s rezon- ing of the water area north of the existing marina to allow the Marina to expand. The rezoning bylaws have been given two readings by council. The bylaw is expected to come before council Monday for third reading and adoption, although aldermen can turn it down or refer it to a later meeting. Lunde and others said the pre- sent marina has polluted the beach where children once swam and families used to picnic.
