Former teacher scored 100 Sunday A former teacher made the grade Sunday, celebrating her 100th birthday at Resthaven Lodge in Sidney. Born in St. John’s, Newfoun- dland, on June 16, 1891, Elsie Field Hartin has lived in Sidney since 1967. She moved in to Resthaven Lodge in 1985. She and her husband, Louis, — celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on Sept. 6, 1987 in Resthaven Lodge. Louis passed away in December, 1988. They had met as grade school Students at a country school near Moncton, New Brunswick, and fell in love. Both were attending Willowdale Academy, where strict rules required the boys to get permission before talking to any of the girls. The young Louis Hartin was attracted to Elsie, who was two years ahead of him in the academy, and he gradually worked up enough courage to talk to her. Later, when Elsie went to South Lancaster Academy in the United States, she and Louis wrote letters GENERAL MEETING The Sidney and North Saanich Community Arts Council will hold a general meeting June 27 at 7:30 p.m. in Sanscha Hall, Sidney. On the agenda are a proposed art auction and a discussion of goals for the arts council. A letter has been sent to arts groups in the area asking them to outline their needs and suggests for the arts council. * * % An Arts Directory membership list has been completed and will be available at the June 27 meet- ing. eK The arts council is planning an arts auction to be held in August. Louis gained her parents’ approval for the wedding and the couple were married at a church camp meeting in New Brunswick on Sept. 6, 1917. Both attended Andrews Univer- sity in Michigan. Louis became a professor of theology and Elsie gained a teaching certificate. Both taught in Seventh Day Adventist academies and schools throughout Canada and the United States for 47 years. In 1940, Louis earned his mas- ters degree from Boston Univer- sity and continued teaching at colleges. He retired from Pacific Union College in Angwin, Califor- nia, in 1967 and the couple moved to Sidney. Although they couple had no children, several friends and a miece, Evelyn Paisley of Victoria, gathered for a birthday party Sat- urday at Rest Haven Lodge.
