_ Gardening TheReview Wednesday, June 19,1991 — A20 Busy week of planting and hanging baskets I promised that I’d say some- thing more about those earwig traps that worked so well for Chris Pike. He had put several of them up in his peach and nectarine trees. The following morning when he opened one of them he estimates there were 150 young earwigs, and, in another, about a hundred, so there is no doubt that traps are wonderfully effective. I put the one he had given me under the Scarlet Runner beans. The lower leaves were being chewed by someone hungry. The next moming the trap was empty, so the chewer couldn’t have been an earwig...probably a slug. I am now trying it in the greenhouse where one of the pepper plants is almost naked. Again no luck...a slug there, too, likely, which at least means we have a few, if any, earwigs! These traps aren’t available at garden centres, but if you know someone with a router, you might get a few made for you. Each trap consists of two facing pieces of half inch lumber, about three inches wide and six inches long. Five channels are hollowed out in each, directly opposite one another, so you have a series of tunnels for the earwigs to hide in (until discovered by YOU, of course!). Laura Clackett has just called to ask about moving a rhododendron .. can she transplant it now, or should she wait until fall? I’d wait until fall, unless you want to spend the summer keeping it really well watered. Laura also has masses of what appear to be black aphids on her sngwball bush, and to get rid of these she could try a soap and water spray, doing it on a day when it doesn’t rain (ho, ho, ho) (painful sound of hollow laughter!) The usual quantities should do if...one quarter teaspoon of soap, put in your litre sprayer AFTER you’ ve filled it with water, or it'll be suds to your armpits for sure! Spray both tops and bottoms of leaves. Talking for a moment about aphids; this is the time to take the topmost growth off your broad beans, before they get infested with black aphids. whose tulip leaves were still green, putting the tulips into large pots, with lots of soil, and leaving them in the shade for the time being. ‘I's hard to wait for these late flowering tulips to finish doing their thing, isn’t if?’ Steam these tops, and serve with a dash of butter (margarine), salt and pepper. Delicious! Still on aphids, please don’t use the soap spray on either sweetpeas or nas- turiiums. If you are growing honeysuckle keep an eye open for green aphids on the bud clusters. We have the worst infestation ever, this year. I’ve made some rhubarb tea, and will spray with a combination of it plus soap and water. Probably the thubarb tea, alone, would work on Nasturtiums and sweetpeas, but soap seems deadly. May I suggest you drive in a short stake by each of your Squashes, then, when they get immense, with leaves everywhere, you will know where to pour most of the water. This past week I have spent every moment planting up baskets and pots, and am still not fin- ished...I grew too much of every- thing (as usual). I even emptied several planters It’s hard to wait for these late flowering tulips to finish doing their thing, isn’t it? I’ve also been potting up individual impatiens plants in half-gallon contain- ers....those to go in the beds out front where the soil is full of tree Toots. I'll half bury these pots so, that they don’t look too awful, and may even bring some of them in, in the fall, to provide us with a few houseplants, A largish limb down yesterday from the big dogwood tree right across our best peony plant (matu- rally!) Makes me wonder if this tree is getting to the end of its life span...the winds have been harsh, but surely not THAT strong! We'll just have to wait and see, I guess. “himself’s’? dahlias are enjoy- ing life where he planted them against the greenhouse. They are considerably larger than the ones I put in, at a short distance from - “his”. He had a lot of trouble with several of them because of slugs, but seems to have solved the problem by using a circle of sand around each one. If you have fruit trees, don’t faint when what appears to be your entire crop starts to wither and then fall off. This is nature’s way of thinning excess fruit, and will leave you with a better spaced crop of larger apples, (pears, whatever). This phenomenon is called “the June drop.” Now I must get outside and thin the turnips and carrots before cov- ering them with Reemay. This is a job I detest, but if we are to end up with sizable root vegetables it will have to be done. “himself” makes himself scarce when this chore looms, and I really can’t say I blame him!
