The automatic tire chains stole the show. Guests at the June 11 official dedication admired the flashing lights and gleaming paint on North Saanich’s new $225,000 fire truck, but it was the demOnstration of the automatic tire chains that had visitors peering under the truck to watch the remote control chains drop under the truck wheels. The 1990 White Volvo GMC cab and chassis has a 300 horse- power Cummings diesel engine, automatic transmission and can pump 1,050 gallons of water per minute, volunteer fire Chief Terry Towle said. It caries 600 gallons of water and a piped-in foam unit for vehicle and chemical fires. A turret monitor offers control for large structural fires and an on-board generator provides area lighting, Towle explained. The full emergency lighting includes corner strobe lights to alert oncoming traffic at intersec- tions. The truck replaces a 1971 pum- per, capable of pumping 840 gal- lons per minute, which will still be held in reserve at the McTavish not exactly as illustrated 7 PIECE SET STARTING FROM assoried colours Road fire hall. North Saanich fire department equipment now includes four pumper trucks, an equipment van and a fire prevention van divided between two fire halls. There are 42 volunteer firemen who train from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. every Tuesday. “North Saanich is one of the largest B.C. municipalities in area which is still under volunteer pro- tection,” Towle noted. The department receives 125 to 160 calls annually, Towle said.
