Even children from the kinder- garten classes have taken a tum sanding down the outside of the canoe, which was started last Feb- Tuary by a small group of teenage boys in the school’s alternate edu- cation program, The canoe quickly became a project for all of the students, says teacher Peter Brand. 3 With the help of local canoe @ maker Manny Cooper and local carver Charles Elliott, three logs = were chosen from the Fletcher s Challenge dry land sort at Lake Cowichan. The logging company donated the logs, which were cut on the west coast. For the canoes, the Students needed logs at least 32 inches in diameter and over 30 feet long. One of the logs was sliced in half and will eventually become two racing canoes; a one-man canoe and a two-man canoe. Another log will be shaped and carved into a traditional Salish working canoe. So far the students have finished most of the shaping for the two- @man canoe. The 27-foot long “canoe will be left to season over the summer and will be painted in school colors next winter, in pre- paration for the next canoe racing season. There are very few carvers leff who a canoe’ Brand expects school teams will | be formed to race the canoe. | Eventually the students will also ‘finish the one-man canoe, which will also represent the school in the races, Brand said. He credited Manny Cooper with providing the expertise and many of the tools which allowed the Students to construct the canoe. Cooper also worked on the canoe, helping the students shape | ~ COMBO SPECIAL * CHICKEN CHOW MEIN * CHICKEN CHOP SUEY x SWEET & SOUR CHICKEN BALLS * DEEP FRIED PRAWNS RTEAR COFFEE 60 T\ INCLUDED ee Fly Restaur Le - EAT IN - know how to make - EVERY DAY ... When completed, the canoe will be no more than three-quarters of an inch thick at any point and will be strengthened by cross-bracing. “There ate very few carvers left who know how to make a canoe,”’ Brand said, adding that the tradi- tional skill is disappearing. “We're lucky to have Manny Cooper here to share his know- ledge with us.” More help came from Tanners Books of Sidney. Owner Clive Tanner donated $500 to the project on behalf of the store. Although there are other racing canoes on local reserves, Brand noted there are no local examples of a traditional Salish canoe.
