‘4 Police teams in torch run Members of six Greater Vic- toria police departments join forces next week for a torch run to raise money for the B.C. Special Olympics. On June 21, the officers will be carrying the torch in the 1991 B.C. Law Enforcement Torch Run. : It begins at Mile 0 in Victoria and ends 50 kilometers later in Sidney. Each team contains eight runners and will cover a distance of about five kilomet- ers. After, a ceremony and barbe- cue will be held at Centennial Park for the runners, Special Olympic athletes and local sup- porters. Special Olympics provides programs which encourage and assist mentally-challenged peo- ple to enjoy athletic competi- tion and achieve their fullest potential. People can donate at the Central Saanich police depart- ment office or the RCMP detachment in Sidney. Top gymnasis The Victoria Gymnastics School’s midget team placed second overall at the Vancouver Island Divisional champion- ships held recently in Port Alberni. The team includes nine-year- old Nikki Burrows, of Bren- twood Bay. Her placings were sixth on bars, seventh on vault, and ninth in floor and beam. Tight finish for golfer Green Gayle Green, of the Glen Mea- dows Golf Club, lost her consola- tion flight match in last week’s Victoria and District women’s golf championship at Royal Colwood. She was defeated Wednesday on the 21st hole by Marge Stubbs of ~ Royal Colwood. Summer Games in July. The trio earned berths at Sum- mer Games trials held June 8-9 in Powell River. Adam Street, 14, running for Sprints West Track Club, took first and advanced in the three events he entered — the 100m (11.00 seconds), 200m (22.9) and 400m. Jeannette Vandenbulk, 14, quali- fied in the triple jump, 300m hurdles and 800m. The Victoria Track Club athlete ‘won the triple jump, long jump and 300m hurdles in Powell River. She placed second in the 400m and 800m, third in the 100m and fourth in high jump. The Peninsula Track and Field Club’s Andrea DePol also advanced in the 1,500m and 800m. Other club athletes participated in the two-day meet. For Peninsula, Mark Holloway Beauchemin finishes in ihe money ‘Glen Meadows golf pro Ed Beauchemin finished in the money on the first stop of the Canadian Pro Tour last weekend. Beauchemin wound up well behind the leader in the Victoria Open, played Thursday to Sunday at the Cowichan Golf and Country Club, but he managed to earn $439, with a four-round score of 219.
