News - Dismal turnout for challenge The results are in from last week's Participaction Challenge, and they don’t flatter little Sidney- by-the-Sea. Not enough people donned their sneakers Wednesday to make the contest close. Our Sidney was challenged by Ontario’s Township of Sidney. Last Wednesday, residents were encouraged to register 15 minutes of continuous physical activity. The community recording the higher percentage of the popula- tion was the winner. : The verdict: Sidney, Ont. — 42.5 per cent; Sidney, B.C — 5.3 per cent. In terms of numbers, this means 528 registered here, compared to 9°800 out east. At least the Ontarians can’t be too smug, as a third Sydney — this one in Nova Scotia — also recorded 42.5 per cent. Don’t be surprised to see a new flag flying at Town Hall. That’s because as part of the challenge, the losing community agreed to fly the winner’s flag from May 30 to June 2, Town officials here are left to ponder what went wrong. “We've got a lot of work to do for next year,” said Mayor Marie Rosko. She believes it was the first time the challenge was held in the town. “We're going to really promote this next year,” she said. “We’re going to start in January. “It’s a good community fun thing, and I don’t see why we can’t be up there.” She singled out the contribu- tions of students at the Sidney Elementary and Greenglade Ele- mentary schools for their support. Youths caught in cultural centre Police on a routine patrol were informed by a neighbor that four youths were inside the Central Saanich library/cultural centre on Clarke Road in Brentwood Bay about 11 p.m. May 11. - A second car was called in “and we surrounded the place, appre- hending two boys aged 13 and 17 - Anew " spirit of giving Avnarional Beso ceotrs giving and two girls, both 12,” deputy police Chief George Lawson said. The four were drinking soda pop in the basement. “That citizen deserves an Atta- boy,’ Lawson said. The young people were given a ride home. -ONLY-A- HANDFUL turned out Wednesday for a Park Walk along the Lochside seaside. More talks on staff salaries Sidney town administrators will be waiting a few more weeks to see how much of a raise they'll get this year. The Town’s Committee A rec- ommended to council on May 27 that management salaries be increased an average of 5.5 per cent for 1991. However, only committee A chairman Ald. Ted Daly agreed with the recommendation. Other aldermen wanted to refer the matter to council’s committee of the whole for a “new discus- sion.” Daly said management salaries in Sidney were compared with those in 10 other municipalities of a similar size. The result — Sidney administrators make less than their counterparts. “This increase doesn’t make Sidney leaders-of-the-pack by any means,” said Daly. However, Ald. Don Amos said he “had some concerns about the percentage. There is quite a fluc- tuation (among increases proposed for various administrators) and we are im recessionary times.” He asked council to refer the matter to an in camera session of committee of the whole, but this was rejected. Then aldermen oied down the — original motion presented by Daly. Ald. John Calder, noting man- agement got an increase of about 12 per cent last year, said he was not happy with the further hike proposed. He recommended, and council agreed, to refer it to a committee of the whole discussion. FURNISHED 2 BDRM ACCOMMOD. WANTED! FOR 4 - 5 MOS.
