News Socred Mel Couvelier says the wildcard entry of the Reform Party of B.C. into the local electoral race will likely hurt his re-election bid. “To the extent that they are successful in attracting votes, I believe they will harm my candi- dacy more than the NDP,” Couvel- ier Said Friday. He was responding to the RPBC’s decision last week to form its first constituency associa- tion in the province in the Saanich North and The Islands riding, with the goal of fielding a candidate. Couvelier noted in his bid for the Social Credit leadership, “‘I have the same objectives that the provincial Reform Party is advo- cating.” He added the RPBC platform is vague where his is specific. He also contends his goes further in several areas, including freedom of information, limiting campaign expenditures and disclosure of election contnibutions. Couvelier said he has fought for some time to implement things like freer votes in the legislature, recall of MLAs by their consti- tuents and fixed election dates within cabinet. These are key ele- ments of the provincial Reform platform. “As long as I was in cabinet, I had to keep these views confiden- tial because of the structure of the Parliamentary system,” he said. “No one would know I pro- posed these things over a long period of time.” He said people may think he is being opportunistic holding reform-oriented policies, but he can’t worry about or change peo- ple’s perceptions. “I’m not running on the Reform Party platform. These initiatives are long overdue.” NDP candidate Elsie McMurphy said her campaign won’t be influenced by a Reform entry, and she would not comment directly on the effect it might have on her chances. She said people have grown weary of the “dithering” and internal squabbling in the Reform camp. “People in B.C. and on the Peninsula feel it is time for a change ... Weve put forward a solid platform of proposed legisla- tion to the public that is striking a chord with the voters.” Clive Tanner, the Liberal candi- date, said people who believe in what the Reform Party stands for should cast their votes in that direction, even though that might hinder his chances. “TJ would prefer if they voted with a longer-term point of view,” he said, adding he believes the Liberal Party of B.C. provides a more realistic alternative for those seeking change. ae aes 9732 ist Street sae Days : Sidney By The Sea A WEEK 656-1822 He said the federal Reform Party is opportunistic, and “I suspect the provincial Reform Party won’t be around for the long term and probably is more created out of frustration with the system and with disenchantment with all poli- ticians.”” Independent candidate Bob Bowcott said he didn’t think a local RPBC bid would have any impact on the outcome. He said the Reform Party of Canada, of which he is a member, includes people who support a number of provincial parties. He said it is likely they will maintain that allegiance rather than jump to the RPBC. The provincial Reform Party has no base of support in the riding and limited resources to fight a campaign, he said. by Girard Hengen The Review The Reform Party of B.C. has set up its first constituency associa- tion in the province in Saanich North and The Islands as it pre- pares to do battle in the coming provincial election. Formed May 28 at a private . meeting of about 30 people, the association plans to go public in the next few weeks when a riding executive and candidate is picked. Although there is no formal connection between the RPBC and the Reform Party of Canada, many Saanich North RPBC supporters are members of the federal party, admitted Don Hutchings, past- president of the federal Saanich- Gulf Islands Reform Party const- tuency association. TheReview Wednesday, June5,1991 — A4 New party will hurt — Couvelier Reform ready on provincial scene > “Reform doesn’t necessary have to happen only in Ottawa,” said Hutchings. The group is dissatisfied with the Social Credit government, and has decided the Saanich North riding 1s ripe for electing an RPBC candidate, he said. The move has been taken with the full knowledge that the federal party has stated it will not enter provincial politics, Hutchings said. In fact, the Reform Party of Canada executive is debating whether to force members who sit on the RPBC executive to surren- der their national memberships. Hutchings said that smacks of discrimination, since many federal Reform Party supporters belong to other provincial parties. “Tf they pull my pee ee > they should pull everybody’s, said. He said himself, former Socred - Cabinet minister Bill Ritchie, Roger Rocan, former president of the Victoma federal constituency association and Bill Rumley, presi- dent of the Esquimalt-Juan de Fuca federal Reform Party riding association, spearheaded the for- mation of the Saanich North organization. Ron Gamble, the North, Van- couver-based president of the RPBC, said the party hopes to run between two to 12 candidates. The ultimate goal of the party, which does not have a leader, is to hold the balance of power The decision to take an active role in the election came when the Social Credit government failed to address five patty principles in its Continued on Page A29 Sidney, Prices Effective June 4 - 8/91 We Reserve, the Right to Limit Quantities | 2531 BEACON AVE. “Sidney By the Sea” SINCE 1964 SERVING THE ARNA, HELPING YOU EAT FOODS BETTER FORLESS EVERY DAY. ~ Shop at SIDNEY SUPER FOODS 7 Days a Week THURSDAY & FRIDAY OPEN TILL 9:00 PM, GUT FROM CANADA GR. “A” BEEF FRESH CUT FOR BBQ.
