Vandalism at other homes Editor: ' This letter is in response to your front page article on vandalism (Police looking for witnesses to vandalism, The Review, May 22). It has been a week now since my husband, his sister (who came to visit us from 1,500 miles away) and I came home to find our home had been trashed and vandalized. Up until now, I’ve hardly been able to talk about this trouble without a hurting sick feeling inside. The first couple of days after we arrived home to see the senseless destruction to our home, I went about my chores at home then to my work place, in a state of shock, feeling empty and lost, trying so hard to find reason for this insan- ity, Needless to say I found no answers, simply because there is no rhyme or reason to ruthless vandalism. To those who are responsible for vandalizing our home as_well as other homes on the Saanich Penin- sula and other places, I would like to make this statement: One day when you all have grown up and some day own your own home, whether it be by pur- chase or rent, taking responsibility for yourself for your family and for your dwelling place, I pray this never ever happens to you. It is devastating — I would not wish this on anyone, not even my worst enemy. Thanks be to our Heavenly Father who has helped us and guided us by His Word, my hus- band and I have managed to work and work very hard for our home and family. Our Lord God will sustain us and help us overcome and bring Peace once again into our lives and home. Back to the news article. I believe there was some mis- information, especially in regards to furniture being thrown out the windows. Since there were two know, that were vandalized that same weekend, the destructive vandalism of the homes may have been pooled together and misinter- preted as one home. The destruction done to our home was bad enough; multiple broken windows — trashing inside and outside — other minor dam- age but I do not want your readers to be misled into believing that the total reported damage was to our home alone. Again, as the police spokesman in your article stated, such tre- spassing or private property and public property causing deliberate destruction and malicious mis- chief must stop. Just because indi- viduals choose to hide in large numbers. to carry out their mali- cious, senseless acts of vandalism does not excuse, justify or glonfy such deeds. Even if these individuals are never brought to justice, each indi- vidual who has done such acts, knows who he or she is. They will carry with them the same for what they will one day see aS an inexcusable, iresponsi- ble act for a very long time, if not for the rest of their lives. I believe that on the whole the youths who participated in these acts of vandalism and hoop-la are not totally senseless and unworthy, but will hopefully some day be strong upright responsible citizens. I pray that these individuals will. have back bone enough to break away from this “mob syndrome” before it destroys them. I had an accident with my van (no claim was made with ICBC) and you reported that I was con- victed of impaired driving. Fair enough. But on May 14th, 1991 an appeal court overturned that judg- ment and acquitted me. I noticed nothing in your paper May 22nd. Perhaps an oversight, perhaps something forthcoming in a future edition. But I’m sure that 1f you believe in honest journalism and fair play you will point this fact out to the public with as much prominence Doug Brietzke Victoria Editor’s note: Because Brietzke was acquitted in a Vic- toria court The Review does not have the ability to report the specific arguments leading to the judge’s decision.
