Sports TheReview Wednesday, May 15,1991 — 425 i ele ee by Girard Hengen The Review For most golfers, a disappoint- ing sudden-death loss on the 42nd hole of the day in a match-play tournament would be reason enough to give the game a rest for awhile. But Glen Meadows pro Ed Beauchemin isn’t about to let the grass grow under his fect. Beauchemin is philosophical about his defeat on the sixth sudden-death hole of the Van-- couver Island Open Sunday at the Cowichan Golf Club. Nine hours after teeing off in the morning, Gorge Vale*s Grant Mil- liken beat Beauchemin in the scheduled 36-hole match play Open final. The two golfers were dead- locked after 36 holes, necessitating the playoff. On hole 42, Beauchemin’s drive hit a bunker. He scored a double bogey, while Milliken managed a bogey and his second Open title in a TOW. “Tt was just a bad shot,” said the 32-year-old Glen Meadows pro. “The wind was blowing hard. I was waiting for it to die down a bit. “T should have probably hit one more club.” Beauchemin, who won the Open in 1984, said the loss was disap- pointing, but now it’s time to move on. “We both wanted to win, but golf is my job now. I’m not going to sit around and sulk about it,” he said. Indeed, this summer he plans to take his game on the road for the Canadian Professional Golf Asso- ciation Tour ‘He’s taking his wife and three- year-old daughter on a three- month journey across the country, from Victoria to Prince Edward Island. He said last week his complete game, from the tees to the greens, has been improving to the point where it is almost ready for tour competition. “Tt’s not far from being good ... It’s getting closer though. I can see signs of it being close.” _ The Canadian tour begins next month, and Beauchemin knows what’s in store, having spent two months on the tour in Asia this winter. 200 m/660 ft PROFESSIONAL SPORTS WATCHES Supeah Swiss Quality Ladies & Gentlemen's from $295;00 Faces jewcllas 2403 Beacon Avenue Sidney, B.C. 655-1515 _/ S) It gave him a taste of the compe- tition and scores needed to win. He also learned a bit about the lifestyle. ED BEAUCHEMIN “Anyone who thinks it’s glam- orous, even for the top players (on the US. Tour), well, it’s not always a glamorous lifestyle,” said Beau- chemin, relaxing at the Glen Mea- dows clubhouse. But he adds he is maintaining a positive attitude for the long hot |, sudden-death defeat not discouraging summer pounding the pavement. “Tt will be nice having my wife around. Being away for the first time in Asia was not easy,” he said. He earned his Tour card last fall after two unsuccessful attempts. Like any golfer, Beauchemin’s goal is to progress to the big show — the American tour “It’s the ultimate goal of any player that’s a professional,” he said. But in the meantime, he said he’s “not looking past the sum- mer.” If things go almght, and he makes enough money in Canada to pay his expenses and is able to attract additional sponsors, he hopes to go on a tour this winter. Beauchemin spent a lot of ime this year trying to line up sponsors, but he came up short of his target, he said. “I'm at the point where I’m going to have to let my game do the talking.” It was talking loudly throughout the Island Open. On Saturday at Olympic View, he advanced to the final match with a 4 and 3 semifinal win over Gorge Vale pro Doug Morgan.
